Phantoms are one of the many Jobs that players can unlock and use within Bravely Default 2. This stealthy mage is much like a mix of the Thief and Black Mage jobs. This job can be a bit to figure out.

The trick to understanding the Phantom is mainly getting the fact that they aren’t simply a dark magic-user. They are part of the shadows and for good reason. As their dark powers will cost the player both MP and HP.

The Phantom and How to Use Them in Bravely Default 2

The Phantom has a heavily aggressive playstyle that also must avoid being hit as much as possible. This glass cannon has some great stats and is well worth learning how to play. The Phantom’s main ability gives a good indication of this. Achille’s Heel causes any attack that exploits the enemy’s weakness, magical or physical, has a 50% chance of dealing critical damage. The other special of the Phantom is called Results Guaranteed. This essentially trades off 40 MP for the guarantee of any ability with a percentage of working, works.

While Phantom’s may have mostly magic abilities, however, they are pretty skillful with weapons as well. In particular, the Phantom does best with Daggers which they have a natural S-tier in. That’s shortly followed by Bows at an A-tier and Swords at a B. Axes, Spears, Staffs, and Shields should all be avoided as the Phantom’s weapon of choice.

Phantom Abilities:

  • Become Lightning – This ability increases the player’s physical and magical attacks up to 200%. This is in exchange for 20% of the player’s HP.
  • Burial Shroud – Extra powerful Dark-based physical attack on one target. Cost 96 MP.
  • Critical Amp – This passive ability increases the player’s critical hit damage by 30%. Takes up one slot.
  • Dream Within a Dream – Three quick physical attacks on a single target in exchange for 36 MP.
  • Dual Wield – This passive ability will cause dual wielding to work without reducing the weapon’s effectiveness. Takes up one slot.
  • Ethereal Edge – This ability enables the player to ignore the target’s physical defense for three rounds. Costs 66 MP.
  • Flit – Causes the player to evade one physical attack via teleportation. Costs 15% of the player’s HP.
  • Frenetic Fighting – This passive ability causes the player’s maximum number of hits dealt by an attack to go up from 16 to 32. Takes one slot.
  • Milk Poison – A physical attack that is extra effective against poisoned targets. Costs 46 MP.
  • Never-Ending Nightmare – Extra powerful physical attack on a single target. If the player defeats the target with this attack, they will gain another action. Costs 106 MP.
  • Recurring Nightmare – This is a physical attack on a single target. If the target dies, the player gets another action within the round. This ability costs 36 MP.
  • Rewarding Results – This passive ability will cause the player to gain an extra action when they inflict a status ailment on a target. Takes up two slots.
  • Shroud – Strong Dark-based physical attack on a single target in exchange for 46 MP.
  • Sick Twist – A physical attack that deals more damage against a target suffering from Contagion. Costs 46 MP.
  • Turn Tables – This passive ability will make it so when the player evades attacks, their BP increases by one. Takes up one slot.

With all this in mind, the last thing that players should consider with this job is what types of characters work well together. Having a Black Mage would allow the player to abuse Milk Poison and deal a ton of extra critical damage on top with Critical Amp and the Phantom’s secondary special ability. Thieves work well with the Phantom as they are also focused on critical damage and evasion. Lastly, Freelancer or Bravebearer would work well as they are such a diverse and useful job.
