Breaking Bad Creator Finally Confirms Walter White Is Dead

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan at last confirms that Walter White died in the series finale. Bryan Cranston won four Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmys for portraying White, the mild-mannered chemistry teacher turned meth kingpin at the center of Gilligan’s acclaimed show. After five seasons of slow transformation from law abiding citizen to hard-boiled criminal and killer, White was finally killed in the series finale while trying to rescue his former partner Jessie Pinkman (Aaron Paul) from meth-cooking white supremacists who’d taken him prisoner.

Given White’s iconic status and seeming invincibility however, many fans actually refused to believe he was dead. Indeed, when plans were announced for a Breaking Bad movie, speculation immediately heated up that Gilligan and company were scheming to somehow bring White back. That movie, officially entitled El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, will focus on Paul’s Pinkman after his escape from the white supremacists, but thus far it has not been revealed whether White will appear in the film.

Now, Gilligan has answered at least one big lingering question about White’s status. Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show (via Esquire), Gilligan confirmed that White indeed died at the end of the Breaking Bad series finale. In response to a direct question about White’s fate, Gilligan replied unambiguously “Yeah, I’m gonna give you that one, Rich, because I love you so much. Yes, Walter White is dead. Yes.”

Though an El Camino trailer already seemed to confirm White’s death, the door remained open on White being alive until Gilligan finally and definitively slammed it shut. Of course, White being dead does not mean he will not show up in El Camino in either a flashback or dream sequence. As to those possibilities, Gilligan stayed with his tight-lipped habits by refusing to answer. It has indeed already been revealed that dead Breaking Bad character Mike Ehrmantraut does show up in El Camino, after actor Jonathan Banks spilled the beans, so it’s entirely possible that White is in the movie too and Gilligan is playing coy.

Though it’s now been entirely confirmed that Walter White is not alive during the events of El Camino, fans of Breaking Bad still have many reasons to be excited about the movie. The chance to see what happens next to Jesse Pinkman is of course a huge deal by itself, and other original series characters are back as well including Skinny Pete and Badger. Thankfully, Gilligan and company have mostly done a good job guarding the movie’s secrets, so fans can enjoy whatever surprises are in store for them when El Camino hits Netflix and a very limited number of theaters on October 11, 2019.
