The sword-swinging savior ofThe Legend of Zelda has many reincarnations. Various Links throughout the ages have often been the bridge between Hyrule’s many cultures and, at times, even a bridge between timelines as well. Breath of the Wild’s Link, however, has been seen taking his immersion to the next level by indulging in the Gorons’ primary cultural dish: actual rocks.

The release of Breath of the Wild in 2017 introduced players to The Legend of Zelda‘s largest map complete with seemingly-infinite content. In the game, Link has the opportunity to roam the open world in any way he pleases, introducing players to the various regions of Hyrule and their inhabitants. Since then, the story built into Breath of the Wild has expanded into Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a hack-and-slash game developed by Omega Force. The spinoff has provided a unique timeline with new cutscenes that add some refreshing levity to the characters.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Breath of the Wild, if Link spends time in the northeastern province of Eldin, he learns that Gorons mine Death Mountain for nutrient-rich rocks in order to feed their people. Further investigation into their society shows Gorons drooling over what they call rock roasts, or large boulders vaguely resembling meat that are a particular delicacy among the volcanic people. In fact, one of the many shrine quests in Breath of the Wild prompts players to bring a rock roast to a fallen Goron, which instantly reinvigorates him into a frenzy of strength.

Hyrule Warriors: Link Eats Rocks On A Dare

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity gives players keen insight into Link’s relationships with his fellow fighters, including his friendship with the Goron Champion Daruk. In a private cutscene between Princess Zelda and Gerudo Champion Urbosa, the two watch as Link devours actual rocks on what looks like a dare between buddies. Daruk oversees the feat as Link’s fellow soldiers cheer him on with glee. Urbosa comments that Link will “rise to any challenge” as Link is seen swallowing handfuls of rocks with a painful wince. As if that weren’t enough, another Hyrule Warriors cutscene (visible in the video below captured below by ianlink31) shows Link raising the bar even further with Daruk near Death Mountain. After a hard battle won, the Goron offers Link a Prime Rock Roast to regain his strength. Link is given a massive piece of boulder bigger than his head that looks held together with liquid hot magma. Without hesitation, Link crunches into the roast, much to the horror of Zelda and Impa. His constitution seems to know no bounds as he devours the hot rack of rock with ease.

The Legend of Zelda franchise has given birth to Links of all ages, personalities, and capabilities. Players can count on Nintendo to add fine details that differentiate the reincarnated heroes of legend, but by these cutscenes, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has provided perhaps the toughest of them all. With teeth and a digestive system that match the strength of a Goron’s, there is likely nothing that this impressive Link couldn’t withstand.
