Netflix movie chief Scott Stuber gave an update on the status of Bright 2. The original fantasy action film was released in 2017. It was directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad) and written by Max Landis (Chronicle). The story follows an alternate reality where humans and creatures live amongst each other. When an LAPD police officer (Will Smith) is partnered with an orc (Joel Edgerton), they must beat evil creatures to find a powerful magic wand. The cast also stars Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Édgar Ramírez, and Ike Barinholtz.

In the same year, Netflix put in an order for a sequel. It has been confirmed that Smith and Edgerton will be returning to their roles. However, it had to be delayed to accommodate Smith’s schedule. In 2020, it was confirmed that Ayer would no longer be directing Bright 2. Louis Leterrier is replacing Ayer in the director’s chair, who has previously directed The Incredible Hulk, and Now You See Me. An anime spin-off has also been announced as of June 2021, titled Bright: Samurai Sword.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Variety reports that Stuber and Netflix are close to receiving a final script for Bright 2. When discussing his reasoning for expanding upon franchises, Stuber said that it’s about more than just the data but the passion for the project. See below for Stuber’s statement:

“It’s all gut. The data stuff is hugely overstated. At the end of the day, you have to ask: Do you believe in it? Do you have passion for it? Do you think it’s going to work?”

Upon release, Bright was received exceptionally poorly by critics, while audiences generally found that critics were a bit harsh. However, it became one of the most streamed Netflix films ever, so it makes sense why the streaming giant would be interested in making more content within this universe. Netflix’s film division has also expressed plans to make sequels for ExtractionThe Old GuardKissing Booth, and Army of the Dead. Even if they haven’t all been well-received, they have gained traction amongst audiences.

While Bright 2 still doesn’t even have the final screenplay completed, it’s close to being done. Netflix has been known for releasing a wide array of content that doesn’t necessarily have a pattern. However, Stuber is putting his “gut feeling” behind specific projects that he believes deserve to be expanded upon, and it sounds like a Bright sequel is at the top of his list. Stay tuned for more details as Bright 2 gets further along.
