Brooklyn Nine-Nine concluded its second season by answering questions about Captain Holt’s place at the precinct and Jake and Amy’s relationship. In the third season, those choices are addressed and moved forward. Captain Holt had given up his place as captain of the nine-nine for his promotion in public relations, a job he didn’t want, and Gina had left with him. As for Jake and Amy, their romantic relationship took tentative steps forward as they maneuvered the changes from friends and co-workers to a romance.

The third season had surprises in store for several main characters as it continued to develop the detectives of the ninety-ninth precinct.

10 Best: The Oolong Slayer (8.5)

The Vulture’s plot to prevent the squad from working on real cases doesn’t stop Jake from working a case against the Oolong Slayer, a serial killer that had not been active for five years. Going around the Vulture, Jake goes to Holt for backup. Holt decides to work the case with Jake, and Gina helps as well. Meanwhile, the Vulture tells Amy and Rosa to organize his birthday party, giving the two women the idea to hire the Vulture to play with his band at the party. Jake gets Holt is position as captain of the nine-nine back, and Gina returns with him.

9 Worst: Adrian Pimento (7.8)

When Adrian Pimento rejoins the nine-nine after being undercover for twelve years, Jake is excited to work with him. But, the more time they spend together, the more Jake sees that Adrian Pimento has more going on than Jake believed. When Jake thinks that Adrian is a mole, he follows him, only to discover that Pimento’s odd behavior is due to having disappeared for years.

8 Best: Bureau (8.7)

Jake, Rosa, and Holt team up with Holt’s former partner Bob Anderson to break into the FBI. They plan a heist to find a man’s files. Jake, Rosa, and Holt each play a role in pulling off the heist. Holt distracts the security guard by talking about Sex and the City, giving Jake and Rosa the time they need to pull off the job. Meanwhile, Amy works her part of the case working undercover in prison to gain information from Maura Figgis. But, there is one last plot twist in store.

7 Worst: House Mouses (7.8)

Thinking Jake could work a case for a major celebrity; he hands off a minor drug case to Hitchcock and Skully. Except, when Holt’s star turns out to be an oboist, and the small drug case is a major drug bust, possibly the largest the nine-nine has ever seen, Jake and Terry must track down Hitchcock and Skully. Meanwhile, Amy, Rosa, and Gina join forces to help each other face and get over their fears.

6 Best: Yippie Kayak (8.8)

Jake gets to experience a real-life Die Hard scenario when he, Boyle, and Gina get stuck in a store as it gets robbed, and the burglars close off the exits. 5 Worst: The Funeral (7.7)

The Vulture is Captain of the nine-nine, and he’s got it out for Jake and Amy. Not only does the squad have a funeral to attend, but Jake and Amy’s relationship is at stake when the Vulture tells Jake he could either stay detective and break up with Amy or stay with Amy and get demoted. However, they are not willing to go down without a fight. Rosa and Gina are shocked to discover that Boyle had been having sex with a woman he knows nothing about, and Boyle’s personality prevents him from moving forward without knowing anything about her. Holt helps Jake and Amy, giving the Vulture publicity exposure in exchange for the Vulture not demoting Jake or getting in between Jake and Amy’s relationship.

4 Best: Greg and Larry (9.0)

Bill Anderson’s role as working with Figgis causes problems for the nine-nine. After tricking Bill into believing that Figgis’ men had found them, Bill reveals information to the squad. However, they can not celebrate that long. Soon after learning that Figgis’ operation had been put to an end, Jake receives a phone call from Figgis, where his and Holt’s lives are both threatened. A massive turn of events has Jake and Holt living under the names Greg and Larry in Florida.

3 Worst: Hostage Situation (7.7)

When Charles is looking forward to having a child with his girlfriend, his ex-wife makes it more complicated when she appears at the precinct. She is willing to give Charles his sperm back if he intimidates a man into backing out of a lawsuit.

Amy goes to Terry for a recommendation letter for S.A.M.S.A.M. but was not expecting to be rejected. But, Amy later discovers that she was denied because she had applied to be a mentee, not a mentor when Terry’s recommendation had been for being a mentor. Meanwhile, Rosa and Holt must ask Gina for help when a man says he will only speak to Gina.

2 Best: Halloween III (9.0)

The competition for the best detective/genius returns. With Jake and Captain Holt, each holding one victory, this year is a tie-breaker. Jake and Holt’s mutual choice to leave Amy out, believing she would betray either of them to help the other, is the catalyst event for the way the Halloween Heist unfolds. Jake and Holt each thought Amy being left out would make it easier for one of them to win, but Amy had a special surprise in store. Turning on both of them, Amy undermines Jake and Holt, successfully winning the third Halloween Heist for herself.
