Bruce Campbell is not entirely sure if he is actually in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or not. The MCU is going further into the Multiverse as Phase 4 has spent a significant amount of time setting up the concept of alternative realities. Spider-Man: No Way Home helped Marvel Studios get even deeper into the Multiverse with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker sharing the screen with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s respective iterations. After appearing in the Spider-Man threequel, Benedict Cumberbatch will be back as Doctor Strange in the second installment of his own franchise.

While Scott Derrickson, who helmed the first Doctor Strange film, was initially set to direct the sequel, Marvel Studios instead brought on someone who is no stranger to superhero films. Before Marc Webb and Jon Watts’ respective Spider-Man franchises happened, Sam Raimi was the first filmmaker to help bring the web-crawler to the big screen. Even though superhero films have been mainstreamed for years, Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy came at a time when the comic book film genre had not become as massive as it is today. After almost a decade from being away from the beloved genre, Raimi will tell Doctor Strange’s next story with the MCU’s upcoming Multiverse chapter.

Rumors and speculation continue to surround Doctor Strange 2 what Multiverse cameos there may or may not be. Following Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Raimi directing Doctor Strange 2, fans are curious if Campbell, who has collaborated with the filmmaker on multiple projects, is appearing in the MCU installment. During a recent convention, Campbell (via Reddit user chanma50) was asked whether or not he’s showing up in Doctor Strange 2. In true Marvel fashion, Campbell couldn’t give a definitive answer but alludes to the possibility of existing while also explaining why he’s not sure if he’s in the final cut. Campbell also took to Twitter to comment on the rumors. Check out both the quote and the tweet below:

“The truth is I may or may not have been in Doctor Strange 2. I can’t confirm or deny my appearance in Doctor Strange 2 and at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what I say. I could be completely full of s–t because they take entire storylines out of these movies while they’re making them and put some entirely new ones in. So Sam Raimi, who is my buddy directing it, I did not pressure him for a part. I did not call him, but he realize he shouldn’t do one without me so problem is that to this day, they don’t yet know if they’re even using what I may or may not have shot…if I could have talked about it.”

While it is clear as day that Campbell has filmed something for Doctor Strange 2, the actor makes a valid point in bringing up that it’s not always a guarantee that a cameo is kept in. In the cases of a lot of superhero movies, it’s common these days that even some significantly huge appearances or storylines don’t always make the final cut. Doctor Strange 2’s early cut is reportedly three hours long, and so far, Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed the final runtime for the film’s theatrical release. In the end, they may cut Campbell’s role, no matter how big or small it is, hence why the actor is bringing this up.

Campbell, who cameoed in all of Raimi’s Spider-Man films, is playing any of those characters, it would be intriguing to see if they would finally do the Mysterio theory that has floated around for years. When they were initially going to make Spider-Man 4, Campbell was, per rumors, going to be revealed as that world’s Quentin Beck. Even if he doesn’t play a Mysterio variant, Campbell’s cameos were always a delight to watch, which would certainly be the case for Doctor Strange 2 as well if he makes the final cut. With only a few months left to go before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally arrive in theaters, it will be exciting to see what Raimi and Campbell may have in store for the actor’s role.
