Fans of longtime actor-director duo Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi were disappointed when the former revealed that his cameo appearance in the latter’s new project, the prequel film Oz The Great and Powerful, had been dropped on the cutting room floor before it could even be shot.

However, in a recent interview, “The Chin” revealed that he will indeed be showing up in Raimi’s Wizard of Oz flick after all; once again, the actor (tongue planted firmly in cheek, no doubt) described his role as “pivotal” and says it even involves him appearing opposite Oz‘s leading man (Oscar-nominee James Franco).

Here is what Campbell told The Shiznit about his part in Oz The Great and Powerful:

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
“The scene that I shot was a page [of the script] and it took all day. It was great to see the scope of Oz and to see the detail, and the craftsmanship and the professionalism and the incredible stuff that they’re doing visually in every other way… I play a pivotal role. It involves me and Oz – that’s James Franco – and let’s just say that we have a confrontation. It was a very fun role to do actually.”

Besides starring in Raimi’s original Evil Dead trilogy, Campbell also cameoed in the Raimi-directed Darkman, played a recurring role as the cocky crook Autolycus on Xena: Warrior Princess (which Raimi was a co-showrunner on) and portrayed three different cartoony, one-note characters in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Hence, it’s not that surprising to hear that Raimi managed to work out an appearance in Oz for his old pal Bruce.

In terms of Oz The Great and Powerful‘s eye-catching visual design, which Campbell alluded to: it may be a while still before we get a better look at that, seeing how a trailer isn’t expected to drop in the (relatively) near future. If nothing else, though, the promise of Raimi’s vision of that fantastical land somewhere over the rainbow (and a brief appearance by fan-favorite Campbell) is reason enough to be interested in this flick.
