The Webtoon made in collaboration with the K-pop group BTS called 7Fates: Chako hit a record number of views on the digital platform. This fantasy webcomic is one of the Webtoons Originals series, meaning the company has partnering up with creators to produce exclusive original content.

Managed by the label HYBE, BTS (also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan) is the biggest K-pop group in the world consisting of seven members: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. The band’s influence has spread to other mediums outside of music before, including an interactive storytelling game called BTS Universe (BU).  They’re not unfamiliar with webcomics either, having previously released drama Webtoon Save Me that ran for 15 episodes from January 17, 2019, to April 11, 2019, which currently has over 55 million views.

Covered by Bleeding Cool, 7Fates: Chako hit 15 million views after only being released for two days worldwide, breaking several records on Webtoon. It is the highest viewed Webtoon launch of all time, which is especially impressive considering how big comic book companies such as Archie Comics and DC Comics have been entering the Webtoon space with Big Ethel Energy and Wayne Family Adventures respectively. A fantasy series, 7Fates: Chako is set in a corrupt city known as Sin-si that’s being destroyed by creatures known as beom. Now, seven boys find that destiny is bringing them together in an attempt to stop all of the fighting. The characters within the series represent the various members of BTS, which the community is quickly putting together in the comments.

HYBE released the prologue and first episode of the BTS Webtoon on January 14, 2022. The release of this series was subsequently followed by two more fantasy series HYBE is doing with the label’s other groups, including Dark Moon: The Blood Altar with the band ENHYPEN on January 15, 2022, and The Star Seekers with the band Tomorrow X Together (TXT) on January 16, 2022. Ken Kim, the CEO of Webtoon Entertainment, highlights the uniqueness of this endeavor: “This project, in collaboration with HYBE, is an industry-first, simultaneously launching a webcomic and a web novel in 10 languages, with strong fan fractions for all three works… These are pop idols that fans truly love, so we’re thrilled to see fans celebrate the dynamic storytelling and unique illustrations for these webcomics and webnovels. These stories are helping people around the world discover webcomics, and giving existing Webtoon users an exciting new way to imagine their favourite idols.” Webtoon is one of several digital platforms, alongside the likes of Tapas Media and Tappytoon, that allow users to easily publish their own comics. And now, the number of potential eyes on them may have just increased thanks to BTS’ influence.

From taking over Webtoon to trending on Twitter, K-pop groups have been entering just about every medium imaginable. The 7Fates: Chako is just part of a wider initiative with a companion soundtrack from BTS bandmates Suga and Jungkook, entitled Stay Alive, which will be released on February 4, 2022. Fans can continue to look forward to the Webtoon as well, which will add a new episode every Friday at 9 PM ET for viewers to read for free.
