Warning! Spoilers for The United States of Captain America #5 by Marvel Comics below

Bucky Barnes is back as Captain America, as the hero just suited up in his iconic costume with a brand new shield. In The United States of Captain America #5 by Marvel Comics, Bucky put on his old Captain America costume once again and joined a group of caps against a pair of villains who tried to use Steve Rogers’ iconic shield to turn the United States against itself.

The United States of Captain America has followed the hero in his quest to recover his stolen shield. In his journeys, Steve Rogers was joined by Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, John Walker, and a group of heroes who were their own Captain America’s of their own communities. The ultimate Captain America team-up has seen the heroes try to stop Warrior Woman from freeing the Nazi villain Hate-Monger, but their attempts fell short. Now, the heroes are banding together one last time to ensure Captain America’s shield isn’t used as a weapon against the general public.

In The United States of Captain America #5 by Christopher Cantwell, Dale Eaglesham, Matt Milla, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, Steve Rogers learns that the villains who stole his shield want to hypnotize viewers on a broadcast and take control of the country. After Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are captured on a recon mission, the remaining Captain Americas arrives on the scene to free them from the Hate-Monger’s forces. However, when Bucky jumps out of a plane, it’s revealed he’s wearing his old Captain America costume while sporting a seemingly new blue shield.

Bucky uses his new blue shield in the battle and looks good doing it. Ultimately, more than a dozen versions of Captain America team up to stop the Hate-Monger and recover Steve Rogers’ shield. While readers shouldn’t expect Bucky Barnes to step back into the role of Captain America again anytime soon (as he did once Steve Rogers died), it was fun to see the hero jump back into the costume. Plus, with a new shield that resembles Captain America’s MCU stealth shield, Barnes sported quite a unique look.

The United States of Captain America miniseries showed that just because you’re not officially Captain America doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference in your community with a shield. In the end, Bucky Barnes realized that fighting as Captain America alongside the different Caps with his own new shield was both a great rallying call and the perfect way to defeat the Hate-Monger. The United States of Captain America #5 is in stores now.
