Warning! Contains a preview for Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #4

The story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is finally coming to an end in Boom! Studios’ epic miniseries. In every generation, there is a chosen one. She alone shall stand against the vampires, demons, and forces of darkness. She is the Slayer… but Boom! Studios has revealed Buffy Summers has brought the line of the Slayers to an end.

The comic series Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer is set in a world where vampires have won. Written by Casey Gilly and featuring art by Joe Jaro, the miniseries revisits Buffy Summers as an aged veteran who’s struggling to live in a dystopian timeline where the sun has been extinguished and vampires no longer live in fear. Buffy has effectively been outlawed, forbidden from practicing slaying – but, of course, she was never one to follow the rules, even when she was a teenager. The miniseries has seen Buffy uncover the truth behind the sun’s going dark, and she’s working with witches to try to bring it back. Should she succeed, the evil of the darkness will be forced to retreat into the shadows once again.

Now, Boom! has released an official preview for Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #4, the end of Buffy’s story. The last three issues have reignited Buffy’s sense of hope with the discovery of a new Slayer, but the official solicit teases a terrifying ordeal:

“The Slayer and her allies make one last desperate attempt to bring sunlight back to Earth and send the reigning Evil forces back into the shadows . . . but the loss of Buffy’s powers is proving too much to bear, and even with the help of Spike, the witches, and newly discovered Potential Slayer Thess, she might not make it. Will Buffy be able to hold on long enough to save the world and see her Slayer legacy continue in Thess? Find out in the conclusion to the epic post-apocalyptic series”

Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer is effectively the franchise’s version of Logan, a vision of a bitter future and the hero’s Last Hurrah. It’s made possible because Boom! has committed to the Slayerverse, a Buffy multiverse of countless alternate Earths linked by the network of Hellmouths. This serves as a smart narrative trick to allow Boom! to tell potential stories, to deviate from the established timeline in fascinating ways, and to redefine characters and continuity. For example, this dystopian future did have one improvement on the main timeline – Willow and Tara were still together, Tara never having been murdered.

No doubt Buffy and her friends will save the world again. The only question is whether Buffy can find a way to ensure the line of the Slayers continues; she has a new Slayer at hand, but the stakes are higher than ever before, and it would be terrifyingly easy for the child to be killed. Even if Buffy succeeds, though, the new Slayer will be operating in a strange new world – one where vampires and demons are public knowledge and lived alongside humanity for years. Buffy the Vampire Slayer may be passing on the torch – but under the most curious circumstances imaginable. Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer is on sale March 9, 2022.
