It’s currently the month of Caitlyn Jenner’s five year anniversary of her transition. Five years ago, Caitlyn appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair with the statement “Call Me Caitlyn.” Today, Caitlyn says, “I have no regrets.”

Caitlyn transitioned at the age of 65 after battling gender dysphoria her whole life while living as a male witht the name Bruce Jenner. To deal with her life long struggle, she put herself into sports and won the gold. She also became a well known icon and later became a part of the international television show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. During this time, Caitlyn was married to her third wife, Kris Jenner, but their marriage ended in 2014. Shortly after, Caitlyn began her transition and is celebrating her fifth anniversary this month.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In an interview with People, Caitlyn reflects on the last five years of her life. The first time Caitlyn felt genuinely seen was when she received her updated driver’s license in mid 2015. The license had a new picture and a new name, but Caitlyn wondered if she had thrown too much away. After all, Bruce did many great things in his lifetime, such as raise a big family and become a successful athlete. But of course, Caitlyn realized that this was a new chapter in her life where she can achieve more and leave yet another mark on the world.

Caitlyn acknowledges issues in the trans community, such as high suicide and murder rates. When she went through her transition, Caitlyn thought this would be an excellent opportunity to make a positive change in the trans community. Unfortunately, Caitlyn’s new beginning had a rocky start. She has been a Republican her whole life which is seen as a negative in the LGBTQ+ community because their political views don’t align. She faced rejection from fundraisers that she donated to with efforts to make a change. Caitlyn was labelled as “too controversial” which forced her to refocus her mindset to changing one person at a time instead of the whole world at once. Caitlyn now identifies as “economically conservative and socially progressive.” She believes that equality for all is needed and that shouldn’t change based on who’s in the White House.

During all this, Caitlyn has been learning a lot about herself and the LGBTQ+ community. She noted that she has made quite some progress over the last five years. She still has more growth ahead of her, but Caitlyn’s doing what she can to give back to her community. Caitlyn has given trans students scholarships over the last three years and changed her foundation’s focus to trans youth. She realizes she’s different from others in the trans community, but when she wakes up, she’s happy with who she is.

It goes without saying that Caitlyn Jenner has come a long way over the past five years. Not only did she face the trans community and the whole wide world, she faced herself and became the person that she wants and needs to be. Even though Caitlyn’s political views are perceived to clash with the LGBTQ+ community, it’s clear that she’s done her part to learn more, give back and make a change for the better. That stuff might look easy on the outside, but it takes courage and determination to make a change in yourself and the world around you. Caitlyn Jenner has accomplished so much in the past five years, here’s to another amazing five years!
