A group of friends in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s multiplayer recently confused everyone else in the game’s chat by pretending to play Minecraft instead. Both intellectual properties have managed to maintain extreme levels of success over the past decade, particularly Minecraft which is the best-selling video game of all time.

While there are many aspects that have contributed to the ongoing popularity of both Call of Duty and Minecraft, one in particular that stands out is online multiplayer. Thanks to modern technology, online voice chats have allowed gamers to recapture that old-school multiplayer feeling of playing with one’s friends in the same room. Unlike those times, however, voice chat allows for some unique forms of communication thanks to the fact that players cannot see who they are talking to and what is on other gamers’ screens.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

One group of players recently took advantage of what others could not see by pretending to play Minecraft while in Black Ops Cold War’s online chat. Reddit user Slawt_ posted a short clip of the convincing performance they put on with their friends, much to the amusement of the comment section. Only one outsider in the clip questions who in the chat is playing Minecraft while everyone else remains silent. Check out the video in full on Slawt’s YouTube channel below:

Slawt’s video demonstrates some of the fun things players can do in voice chats without resorting to the behavior that has become synonymous with that form of communication. Ever since online gaming became popular for multiplayer, voice chats have developed an unflattering reputation where stereotypical vulgar gamers scream at, threaten, or curse out those they are playing with for no apparent reason. Though most gamers do not do this, stories of that type of despicable behavior tend to grab headlines, which in turn creates an unflattering identity for those who engage in online play but do not act that way.

Thankfully Slawt’s clip is in no way malicious and dispels some of the stereotypes when it comes to online voice chat. All it did was create some brief confusion for outside players and it did not do it at the expense of one particular individual. Slawt and their friends should also be commended for truly committing to the act and selling the idea that they really were playing Minecraft. It’s nice to see something fun like this come out of a popular title like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War because it reminds us that online play is often not like the negative stereotypes.

Call Of Duty Black Ops: Cold War is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
