Out of nowhere, Activision has rolled out a Creator Code feature in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, and streamers are not happy about it. It’s not the first time a game has implemented a feature to let content creators share in profits, with Epic Games making Creator Codes a prominent feature of the Epic Games Store upon its launch.

The most commonly known title to include the Creator Code feature is Epic’s Fortnite. Basically, it grants streamers and other content creators a cut of in-game purchases made with their personalized codes. It allows content creators to have an additional, extremely profitable source of income, as some of the most popular streamers are able to receive thousands of dollars on a monthly basis that way. It keeps creators engaged in the long term while their devoted viewers benefit from a steady flow of entertaining content. And now, the feature has suddenly appeared in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The unexpected inclusion of the Creator Code feature in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has taken the community by surprise. It’s not the first time that such a program for Call of Duty has been mentioned, but there wasn’t an official announcement prior to the update. Several famous content creators are now claiming that they haven’t been reached out to by Activision – nor have they received any personalized codes to support their work. Instead, according to charlieINTEL, a tiny pool of personalities in the industry were treated with Creator Codes. Long-time Call of Duty content creators say that players who’ve been involved in the community for years have been left out in favor of newcomers with bigger audiences. Frustrated by the situation, several streamers have taken to Twitter to share their dissatisfaction and to reach out to Activision.

The Creator Code feature was actually leaked back in March as vague and uncertain speculation. The original leak suggested that Call of Duty players would have been able to buy cosmetic items using codes of their favorite creators, who would’ve received a portion from each purchase. Almost half a year later, the program has gone live in the exact same form as described in the leak.

Call of Duty has an extremely passionate fanbase, represented by a plethora of talented professional players and famous content creators. These people basically dedicate their lives to their favorite games, and in return, Activision is now seeming to completely ignore their efforts in promoting the series. Currently, there’s not a single solid explanation as to why the company decided to roll out the feature without an announcement while leaving the most active content creators behind. Considering the backlash that it’s gaining in the community, Activision owes the community an official statement – and ideally a plan to make things right.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone are available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
