[Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Far Cry 6.]

Diego Castillo is a prominent character in Far Cry 6 and a catalyst for Dani Rojas’ rebellion movement, but he suffers a tragic fate in the game’s main ending. Promotional materials painted Diego as a manipulated victim, and his behavior throughout the game’s campaign confirms his unwillingness to partake in his father’s dictatorship. Still, he meets his death towards the end of the game, and there’s nothing players can do to save Diego – at least not in Far Cry 6’s true ending.

When Diego’s father, Anton Castillo, was diagnosed with terminal leukemia, Anton and his wife, Maria, conceived Diego in an attempt to continue the dictator’s dreams for Far Cry 6’s fictional country of Yara. He now tries to impart as much “wisdom” as possible to Diego in the time he has left, and his deteriorating health and mental state force him to show little mercy towards Diego. As a young teen boy, Diego’s mind is impressionable, but he still comprehends the many injustices his father has committed.

Far Cry 6’s main ending sees Diego die at the hands of his father with one final lesson – that death is the only guarantee in life – as Anton is unwilling to trust Dani with protecting Diego from the guerillas. Unfortunately, his doom is unavoidable if players pursue the intended path for Dani. No player choice made along the way can save Diego from a tense, final confrontation that ends with a bullet in his chest. Players can choose to stop playing the game with Far Cry 6’s secret early ending, but that doesn’t save him from his father’s influence.

Diego Castillo Can Survive Far Cry 6, But He Can’t Be Saved

In the secret ending, Dani flees Yara aboard Clara Garcia’s boat and escapes to the United States. While lounging on a beach, players hear a radio broadcaster announce the rebellion in Yara has been defeated, and the Libertad’s leader, Clara, is dead. Anton reigns as the unchallenged leader of Yara once more. Diego only meets his untimely death in Far Cry 6’s true ending due to Anton’s desire to free him from the consequences of the rebels’ victory. Without the Libertad threatening to overthrow the government, Diego presumably survives, and Anton can continue molding his mind and create the perfect heir to Yara.

Diego is perhaps the most tragic character in Far Cry 6, not for the losses he experiences but because of the imprisonment he suffers. Throughout Far Cry 6, Diego displays disgust, fear, hatred, and sorrow towards his father, but the unfortunate truth of Yara is that not everyone can be saved, even the most innocent. Despite Diego’s good heart, Anton consistently tried to twist Diego to become a “lion” and carry on a bloody legacy he never wanted. While Dani leaving Yara to Anton’s rule ensures Diego survives, there is no way to save him from being corrupted by his father’s teachings.
