Apple’s AirPods do come with some water resistance, depending on the model, but that still doesn’t necessarily mean it is a good idea to wear them while taking a shower. When it comes to any water-resistant product, there are still some limitations, and understanding the specific limits with AirPods will help to ensure the wireless earbuds remain working for as long as possible.

Apple offers more than one type of AirPods. The clearest distinction is between the earbuds and the over-ear AirPods Max headphones. However, the difference between the two types of earbuds — standard and Pro — is more subtle. The standard AirPods and AirPods Pro do differ a little in design, but also in their features with the premium version coming with greater protection from the elements, as well as active noise canceling.

When it comes to water, only the AirPods Pro are resistant. The standard AirPods (whether first or second-generation) don’t offer any form of protection from water. However, even though the AirPods Pro are water-resistant, they are not waterproof. In fact, it is much better to think of the premium earbuds as being splash-resistant than actually water-resistant. As Apple explains, users should also not assume water resistance will always remain the same, but expect the protection to likely diminish over time.

AirPods & Showering

As to be expected with no water resistance, the standard first and second-generation AirPods should not be used in the shower at all. In spite of their improved protection, Apple also recommends not wearing AirPods Pro in the shower either. The reasons for this is the level of water resistance that’s on offer. While they can easily survive rain or a vigorous workout, AirPods Pro are not designed for use under running water. This not only includes kitchen and bathroom faucets, but shower heads as well. For the very same reason, AirPods Pro should also not be used when swimming, or in any other situation where the level of water could prove to be a problem.

Besides the fact that AirPods Pro might not survive the water coming out of the shower head, it is also highly advised that they do not come into direct contact with other liquids often found in the bathroom, such as liquid soaps, shampoos and conditioners. In fact, there can also be occasions when water-related problems can occur even without direct contact with water. For example, Apple also recommends avoiding using AirPods Pro while in a sauna or steam room. All of which makes it pretty clear that AirPods wearers (Pro or otherwise), should probably stick to playing music through their Bluetooth speaker while showering.
