More than a year after Ghost of Tsushima released, Jin Sakai is making his return to investigate another Mongol threat on the neighboring island of Iki. The Iki Island expansion comes with Ghost of Tsushima’s newest version – the Director’s Cut. The expansion itself offers a bundle of new content, but the Director’s Cut also marks the release of Ghost of Tsushima‘s PlayStation 5 version. Many who defended Tsushima from Khotun Khan over the last year will be interested in jumping back into their completed or in progress save file, which is luckily transferrable for those who have upgraded to Sony’s newest console in the meantime.

The Iki Island expansion is only available through the Director’s Cut rebrand, meaning those who already own Ghost of Tsushima will have to pay $20 for the new content, and an additional $10 for the new PlayStation 5 upgrades. The only prerequisite for getting a PS4 save file into the PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima is having the save file in the PS5’s system memory. Having a PlayStation Plus subscription will make this easy, since there’s a good chance the save file has already been automatically backed up to the cloud. Not having PS+ will involve a few more steps.

Those with PS+ can simply go into the PS5’s settings to the save game data section, and find Ghost of Tsushima under the list of files downloadable from cloud storage. Those who do not have a cloud save will have to transfer it from their PS4 another way, such as a USB storage device. Once the save data has been transferred to the new console, the Ghost of Tsushima save transfer process is easy thanks to a main menu option that brings up Ghost of Tsushima PS4 files. All players have to do is select the save file they retrieved from the cloud or the PS4 system storage, and the Director’s Cut on PS5 should be ready to go.

What About Those Without A PS4 Ghost Of Tsushima Save?

Unfortunately, it’s entirely possible that PS5 players who have already started or completed the Ghost of Tsushima base game don’t have access to their PS4 save file. This could be due to a lack of PlayStation Plus or no longer owning a PS4. In that case, players are out of luck, and will have to restart the game if they wish to play the new expansion. This issue may be further exacerbated by players who are also no longer in possession of their Ghost of Tsushima physical copy, forcing them to purchase the $70 Director’s Cut on PS5.

Either way, starting a new save in order to experience the Iki Island expansion will require players to finish the game’s first act. Once the Toyotama region has been unlocked at the outset of act two, an “Iki Island Tales” section in the quest log will become available, where the instigating quest for the expansion can be found. For those who found loved Ghost of Tsushima the first time around, restarting the game may not be a huge problem, but its still a potentially deal-breaking side effect of save transfers between generations.
