Cancelled Iron Fist Season 3 Story Details Revealed by Finn Jones

Finn Jones reveals the details of the scrapped Iron Fist season 3 story. The final solo superhero show before Marvel/Netflix’s The Defenders was mainly deemed the weakest among its peers. Nevertheless, there was still some interest concerning where it was going, and as it turns out, they had everything laid out for its foreseeable future just right before it was canceled.

Iron Fist‘s first year was critically panned, so it was surprising that it was even greenlit for season 2. While its quality never came close to Daredevil and Jessica Jones, its sophomore outing was undoubtedly much better than its predecessor, giving hope that it will continue to improve over time. Unfortunately, before it even got a chance to establish itself within Marvel/Netflix franchise fully, Iron Fist was canceled alongside its whole universe. Season 2 ended on a massive cliffhanger, hinting that there’s more to Danny’s story.

In a new interview with Collider, Jones opens up about what they were planning for Iron Fist season 3 before it was taken off the air for good. He also admits that not moving forward with this narrative was such a gut punch because the show didn’t “reach its full potential.”

“Raven [Metzner], who was the showrunner for the second season, and I were sure that there was gonna be a Season 3, so we had already devised the whole thing. I was so excited to get into that. It really was gonna be about Danny finally assuming the role of the Iron Fist, fully accomplished, fully charged up, and fully in control of his shit, as well. It was gonna be this amazing story [with] Danny and Ward off in foreign lands as a buddy storyline almost. And then, you had Colleen in New York, isolated with this new power, struggling to come to terms with her identity and with this power. At some point, we would have met again and probably formed this crazy power couple [or] superhero relationship.”

There’s still some confusion as to who pulled the plug on these Marvel/Netflix shows. Initially, the streaming giant was believed to cancel the shows one-by-one, but subsequent reports claim it was Marvel’s decision. Building on that second option, it may have something to do with Disney getting its own platform in Disney+ and Marvel Studios’ plans to launch its own small screen branch that’s now been kicked off by WandaVision. Granted that people do not have that much affinity to Iron Fist, it’s still curious how this planned narrative would’ve looked like had it played out. On the heels of the show’s cancelation, a petition aimed to bring it back, but nothing came of it. If anything, it’s Charlie Cox’s Daredevil who’s had the strongest support from viewers — so much so that rumors are swirling right now that he might be in Spider-Man 3.

At this point, Marvel Studios can technically use The Defenders again in the MCU — whether or not they decided to recast the characters is entirely up to them. Given the arrival of Evan Peters’ Quicksilver from the Fox X-Men franchise in WandaVision, they can bring those Netflix actors back. The MCU is currently building their multiverse anyway, and while this version of Iron Fist season 3 might still not materialize, at least the character has a future on the screen.
