Captain America: All Steve Rogers MCU Movie Appearances, Ranked By Rotten Tomatoes Score

It appears that Chris Evans really is done with playing Captain America. The actor donned the character’s iconic shield one last time in Avengers: Endgame and it seems he has no intention of reprising the role anytime soon, with Evans instead focused on furthering himself as an actor by exploring other projects instead.

But how were all of Cap’s movie outings received? Let’s look at the Rotten Tomatoes score for each of the 11 blockbusters Evans appeared in during his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

11 Thor: The Dark World – 66%

Captain America isn’t really in Thor: The Dark World. Instead, Chris Evans makes a brief cameo as the character after Loki adopts his persona during a conversation with Thor, saying just how infuriating he finds the war hero.

The second Thor movie didn’t scale the same heights as the first and is widely-viewed as the lowest moment for the franchise. Given what they’ve done with the God of Thunder since then, however, we’re willing to forgive and forget the film.

10 Avengers: Age of Ultron (75%)

Releasing in 2015 was Avengers: Age of Ultron, with the team having to tackle Ultron after Tony Stark and Bruce Banner’s scientific experiment goes wrong. He’s rather formidable, though, and it takes every bit of fight for the heroes of the movie to reign supreme by it’s bloody, violent end.

Many were critical of the blockbuster and it’s pacing, however, and it scores a respectable but underwhelming 75%. Cap isn’t really at the forefront of the action, but it is the first time we see him attempt to lift Thor’s hammer – which is a scene revisited by the franchise many years later.

9 Captain Marvel (78%)

As the movie coming just before Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel always had a fight on it’s hands to gauge the interest of fans. But it did well at the box office and it’s Rotten Tomatoes score of 78% is certainly not something to be sniffed at.

A bit like in Thor: The Dark World, Steve Rogers makes just a minor cameo. This time it’s in the mid-credits scene with Cap, Black Widow, Bruce Banner and James Rhodes all trying to crack the code of Nick Fury’s pager. They’re left shocked, however, when Captain Marvel herself appears right out of the blue.

8 Captain America: The First Avenger (80%)

Before the first Captain America blockbuster released, Chris Evans was deemed a questionable choice for the role. He had, after all, been part of two Fantastic Four movies that that left much to be desired in the 2000s.

But all doubters were silenced after a fantastic debut appearance in the role. Captain America: The First Avenger saw Steve Rogers go up against the villainous Red Skull, while also meeting love of his life Peggy Carter for the first time. We think it deserved higher – but 80% is commendable.

7 Ant-Man (83%)

Ant-Man is another MCU movie where Captain America only makes a fleeting cameo. This is in the blockbuster’s end credits with Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson seen interrogating Bucky Barnes, in a scene that would ultimately make it into 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

The movie itself scored highly, with fans enjoying Paul Rudd as Scott Lang. After all, who can dislike Paul Rudd? It’s score of 83% might be a tad too high, but it was certainly an enjoyable first movie for Ant-Man, who has become a big fan favorite in the time since.

6 Avengers: Infinity War (85%)

Avengers: Infinity War is a truly epic superhero story. For the first time in the entire franchise the Avengers find themselves going up against an unbeatable foe in Thanos, who succeeds in rendering half of the entire universe to dust with the help of the Infinity Stones.

Cap is part of the Avengers team who tries to stop the Mad Titan – and fails. He utters the final two words of the movie (‘oh god’) and is at his action-packed, emotional best. The score should possibly be higher here, but Chris Evans’ performance deserves full marks.

5 Captain America: The Winter Soldier (90%)

A direct sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier delivers with full throttle. Steve Rogers ends up going against the mysterious Winter Soldier only to find out the villain is none other than Bucky Barnes, who he had thought had died shortly before his time in the ice.

It’s a truly epic battle between good and evil, with Cap, Black Widow and Sam Wilson also helping to bring Hydra’s reign of terror and criminal dealings to an end. The score is high, but it’s a rare example of a sequel that actually works better than the first in nearly every way.

4 The Avengers (92%)

Crossovers aren’t always destined to be a success. Just look at 2016’s Batman vs Superman, which time hasn’t remembered fondly at all. However, 2012’s The Avengers is what happens when everyone actually plans out the characters in depth – and casts the right people in the role.

It was a thrilling sight seeing Cap team up with Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye and Hulk in order to stop Loki from destroying New York City. They’re victorious this time around, and this moment in time is revisited in Avengers: Endgame, with Steve Rogers, Tony Stark and Scott Lang all going back to get the Infinity Stone they require.

3 Captain America: Civil War (91%)

Captain America: Civil War is the final act of the trilogy regarding Chris Evans’ character. And it’s truly enthralling to watch with Steve Rogers going up against Iron Man, choosing his friendship with Bucky Barnes over his relationship with earth’s so-called ‘greatest Avenger’.

It’s a journey full of twists and turns, ending with an epic three-way fight between Steve, Bucky and Tony. The movie is significant, too, meaning two of the strongest Avengers spend the events of Infinity War distanced from each other – playing into Thanos’ hands in the process.

2 Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%)

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the last movie on this list where Captain America isn’t a big player. He makes a brief appearance in Peter Parker’s sports lesson, with the youngster telling an enthusiastic Ned that he ‘stole his shield’ – referencing their epic battle in Berlin in the process.

Many were unsure how the first new Spidey movie would be received given there had been five movies involving the webhead in the 15 years previously. Fortunately fans loved it – with an impressive score of 92%.

1 Avengers: Endgame (94%)

Is there a better superhero movie than Avengers: Endgame? Probably not. Releasing in 2019, it was a satisfying conclusion to all of the MCU movies Marvel had given fans in the years previously.

Cap is a big player in the battle against Thanos and plays a vital role in the villain’s defeat. It’s also the blockbuster where we see him wield Mjolnir for the first time, thrilling audiences in movie theaters across the globe. Steve Rogers then retires from the role afterwards, going back in time to spend his life with Peggy Carter – who he’d left behind many years before.
