Warning! Spoilers ahead for Captain America #26 from Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leonard Kirk

In the latest issues of Marvel Comics‘ Captain America, a problem that’s never really been addressed was just solved for Marvel’s Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon. Joining Captain America in a critical rescue mission, Falcon is seen wearing a new suit and wings. While the new costume is certainly cool and carries some sleek aesthetics, the most intriguing and practical component is the fuller mask/helmet that covers all of Wilson’s face. This is something that the character should have always had, considering the nature of his heroics and fact that he’s often flying head and literally face-first into danger. Now that this problem is solved in the comics, it’s seems like the same should happen in the MCU as well.

In Captain America #25 and #26 from Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leonard Kirk, Sam Wilson agreed to assist Captain America, Winter Solider and Sharon Carter in a rescue mission to save several members of the Daughters of Liberty, including Peggy Carter. Red Skull and Alexa Lukin of the cabal known as the Power Elite were the ones responsible for the kidnappings, and a large conflict ensued as the heroes tried to get their people back. However, Peggy Carter is not one to go down without a fight. Breaking free of her bonds, Peggy was determined to defeat Lukin once and for all, but she ultimately was thrown from a helicopter and started falling to her death at the end of Captain America #25.

This leads to Captain America #26, which gives The Falcon his time to shine by swooping in and and catching Peggy. This also gives fans their best look yet at his new mask/helmet that protects his face from the winds, dangers, and any other hazards that could pop up while flying face-first into conflicts as Falcon does. It’s about time he had some better headwear.

Beyond just protecting him from any potential projectiles, one could assume that the mask might also aid with oxygen. As fast and as high as Falcon often flies, it does seem like having some sort of means to comfortably breath should have been a thing from the beginning. At least he has it now in the comics, though it remains to be seen if this new look will stick around, or if the mask is just a one-off look specific to this particular story arc. Regardless, this same concept needs to make its way over to the Falcon of the MCU.

It’s pretty evident that the MCU’s Falcon could have (and probably should have) used a protective mask from the get-go. In his debut in Captain America: The Winter Solider, Falcon achieved some pretty high altitudes and speeds evading missiles while trying to help Captain America take down three Hydra-controlled helicarriers. Not only that, but trailer shots from the upcoming Falcon and the Winter Solider Disney+ series sees Wilson flying through a canyon while narrowly evading helicopter fire and explosions that barely miss the winged Avenger. All things considered, it’s definitely time for Falcon to look into wearing a full face mask/helmet like he is now in Marvel Comics.
