In a What If…? reality where Earth’s Mightiest Heroes never left Battleworld following the end of Secret Wars, Captain America and Rogue’s daughter Crusader became the combination of four different Avengers. In What If…? Secret Wars: 25 Years Later, Sarah Rogers is the daughter of Steve Rogers and Rogue (whose personality has been overtaken by Carol Danvers), wields her father’s shield, and is worthy of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Crusader is Marvel’s ultimate hero of the future.

Marvel’s Secret Wars is one of the publisher’s most iconic events, as it featured the Beyonder assembling the greatest heroes and villains from Earth onto Battleworld to fight for their ultimate desires. However, while the Avengers and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would break free from Battleworld and return to their home planet following the storyline’s conclusion, in an alternate history, no one managed to escape. In What If…? Secret Wars: 25 Years Later, Beyonder and Galactus ended up killing each other, as Marvel heroes and villains ended up staying on Battleworld for more than 25 years, raising families and developing new allegiances in the process.

In What If…? Secret Wars: 25 Years Later by Jay Faerber, Gregg Schigiel, Jose Marzan Jr. Paul Turtrone, and Chris Eliopulos, a new crop of Marvel heroes emerge in a world where nobody escaped Battleworld. Among them include Thor’s son Balder, the daughter of Wolverine and Storm (Torrent), and the son of the Wasp and the Human Torch (Firefly). However, the most intriguing hero is Sara Rogers, the daughter of Captain America and Rogue, who uses the codename Crusader. Crusader has her father’s super strength and the ability to fly, but her origin is connected to four different Avengers.

In the What If…? one-shot, readers learn Crusader’s mother Rogue actually has the dominant personality of Carol Danvers – as it seems absorbing her powers allowed the Avenger to take control of the mutant. Wielding Captain America’s shield as she fights alongside her fellow young heroes, she leads them to victory against Doctor Doom’s son. In the battle it’s revealed Sara is worthy of Mjolnir, connecting to the hero to Thor. Captain America and Rogue’s daughter would later be critical in teaming up with Hulk to use Mjolnir to teleport the heroes back to Earth. In the end, Crusader proved worthy of the number of heroes who inspired her.

Crusader ended up being the product of four different Marvel heroes. She is the daughter of Captain America and a Carol Danvers-controlled Rogue while worthy of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. In the end, she led her team of Young Avengers in doing the impossible and freeing them from more than two decades of being trapped on Battleworld. While the character only exists in the What If…? reality, Crusader turned out to have the best qualities of Captain America and the other Avengers and was one of Marvel’s ultimate combination heroes.
