Parasite star Park Seo-Joon is officially joining the cast of Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, according to his agency. Rumors about the South Korean actor’s involvement with the film first began circulating several months ago, but had yet to be confirmed until this week. The film itself will serve as a sequel to the 2019 Captain Marvel film and will expand on the story of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), while also adding Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and MCU newcomer Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) to the mix as well.

Park himself is one of the most recognizable actors working in South Korea today. English-speaking audiences will likely recognize him from his role in Bong Joon-Ho’s 2019 film Parasite, where he played Min: the English tutor that initially lends Ki-Woo (Choi Woo-Shik) his tutoring job, which essentially serves as the inciting incident for the whole film. However, Korean-speaking audiences will know Park from a variety of Korean dramas as well as his many sponsorship deals that plaster the actor’s likeness around the country. Now, it appears the actor is officially heading to the MCU.

According to Naver News (via The Seoul Story), Park’s talent agency Awesome Entertainment has confirmed that the actor has left South Korea to film for The Marvels. However Park’s specific role in the movie is still tightly under wraps. The agency said it is “unable to reveal any further details” for the moment. Check out the announcement below:

The initial rumors surrounding Park’s involvement in the film have since ignited fan speculation over who he might play. When it comes to Marvel Comics characters of Korean ancestry, Amadeus Cho is the first to spring to many fans’ minds. Amadeus is a newer character in Marvel lore who adopts the mantle of the “Totally Awesome Hulk” after acquiring Bruce Banner’s gamma radiated powers. The character’s mother, Helen Cho (Claudia Kim), was actually already introduced into the MCU in 2015’s Age of Ultron. However, given Kim’s younger age (and conversely, Park’s relatively older age), it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to portray her son in the upcoming film.

Regardless of who Park will play in The Marvels, it’s nevertheless exciting to see more South Korean actors make their way into the MCU. Claudia Kim was the first, and Train to Busan’s Ma Dong-Seok (a.k.a. Don Lee) will be the second, debuting as Gilgamesh in Chloé Zhao’s upcoming Eternals. The MCU’s global reach affords Marvel Studios the opportunity to pull acting talent from all corners of the world, rather than from the same pool of faces that have become staples in Hollywood. It is good to see Disney finally taking advantage of that opportunity.
