A new photo from the set of The Marvels has potentially revealed that Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie could be making an appearance in the upcoming MCU sequel. 2019’s Captain Marvel saw Brie Larson make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Carol Danvers and detailed the skilled pilot’s journey in taking on the mantle of Captain Marvel. The official announcement came in December 2020 that Danver’s story would continue on with Candyman director Nia DaCosta at the helm, and would this time feature an exciting ensemble cast alongside Larso that includes the likes of Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris and Zawe Ashton.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Parris is set to reprise her role as Monica Rambeau following her MCU debut in Disney+’s Wandavision last year, with Vellani set to make her big-screen debut as Kamala Khan, following the scheduled release of Ms. Marvel, also on Disney+, later this year. As it stands, details surrounding Ashton’s role within the sequel have been kept largely under wraps, although it is believed that the Velvet Buzzsaw star is set to play the film’s key antagonist. As with all MCU projects, a surprise cameo from other beloved heroes (and villains) is always a possibility and it appears as though The Marvels could feature a particularly exciting character.

Now, Zenobia Shroff, who will play Kamala Khan’s mother, Muneeba Khan in the upcoming Ms. Marvel series, has shared a brand new image that appears to hint at a possible appearance from Thompson’s Valkyrie in Captain Marvel sequel. Taking to Instagram to share a sweet montage in honor of the new year, Shroff (via @halobearers) included a photo from what appears to be the hair and makeup trailer on the set of The Marvels. In the background of the image, a number of headshots of the film’s confirmed cast can be seen upon the wall, however, among the images appears to be one of Thompson herself. Thompson made her first appearance as the bounty hunter, Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, before appearing again in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The Men In Black International star will also reprise her role once again in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. Alongside the image of Thompson, fans were also quick to spot that Lashana Lynch’s photo also appears to be on the wall, meaning that Maria Rambeau, Danver’s beloved friend and Monica’s mother, may also appear in the sequel in some capacity, despite the fact that Wandavision appeared to confirm the character’s tragic passing.

While Thompson’s appearance in the film remains unconfirmed at this stage, it certainly begs the question as to what sort of role Valkyrie could have within the events of the Captain Marvel sequelWith rumors recently swirling that Larson could be galaxy hopping over into Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s not unlikely that the events of the fourth Thor installment could have some cross-over elements that set Valkyrie up for an exciting new adventure alongside Captain Marvel herself. With a multitude of MCU films standing between now and the release of Captain Marvel 2, it’s anyone’s guess as to how the events of this upcoming sequel could unfold.
