Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, teases the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, entitled The Marvels, will be epic. Parris made her MCU debut in the first Marvel Studios series to premiere on Disney+, WandaVision, as the grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, daughter of Maria (Lashana Lynch), Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) best friend. It’s revealed in episode 4 of the series that she also joined the Air Force before being recruited by S.W.O.R.D to investigate the Westview Anomaly.

After being trapped in the Hex, tossed out by Wanda Maximoff, and then forcefully reentering it, Monica’s physiology is mutated, giving her the abilities including energy absorption. In the comics, Monica becomes a superhero who goes by the names Photon, Spectrum, and eventually Captain Marvel. Piggybacking off the mid-credits scene from WandaVision’s finale, the upcoming sequel, director Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, will see Monica team up with Carol as well as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park). The film will also see the big-screen debut of Kamala Khan Aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani).

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers promoting DaCosta’s Candyman, Parris was asked about her experience working on The Marvels. Filming is currently underway in London and is set to release in theaters on November 11, 2022. Check out her comments below:

I will tell you that I am in London, I am having an amazing time filming The Marvels, and it’s gonna be pretty epicIt’s really exciting, and I can’t wait.”

Filming for The Marvels will head to Italy later this month. Larson’s excitement seems to mirror Parris,’ with both of them training intensely. Larson also previously teased the movie is full of “huge sets” depicting insane worlds and revealing “juicy secrets.” WandaVision alluded to a falling out between Monica and Carol concerning the decline and eventual death of Maria Rambeau. That said, the sequel is set to reveal what exactly happened to Captain Marvel’s relationship with the Rambeaus prior to Avengers: Endgame. There’s sure to be some sort of reconciliation as Monica is poised to inherit “Auntie Carol”s mantel of Captain Marvel, something that won’t happen if they’re still on the rocks.

Similar to WandaVision, Disney+’s Ms. Marvel series will premiere in 2022 and presumably lead into The Marvels. It’ll be interesting to see how the film ties into what appears to be the MCU’s ever-evolving Multiverse saga which began in Loki and continues in films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This same question applies to Phase 4’s other solo outings including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsThor: Love and ThunderBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With multiple versions of Kang out there conquering multiple worlds, the MCU needs as many agents, Defenders, Avengers, Guardians, and Marvels as it can get.
