Captain Marvel Definitely Killed Iron Man (For Real)

Iron Man isn’t one to easily forgive and forget. Especially, when it comes to those who have cost him his life. So, it comes as no surprise Tony Stark still holds a grudge against one of the most powerful Avengers and for good reason. He’s still mad at Captain Marvel for previously killing him.

In 2016’s Civil War II, Iron Man and Captain Marvel went toe-to-toe over an Inhuman named Ulysses who could predict the future. Carol Danvers saw Ulysses as an asset, who could help prevent crimes before they happen. Meanwhile, Tony didn’t see the logic in arresting people before they commit a crime. The conflict concludes with Danvers taking down Stark and the billionaire later becoming an A.I version of himself.

In Tony Stark: Iron Man #19, it’s revealed Tony isn’t ready to forget. After taking down an Ultron/Hank Pym hybrid, the rest of the Avengers show up after the battle. Captain Marvel approaches Tony and asks him how he’s doing. He responds by telling her he’s “fine,” but really he thinks that he’s not the real Tony since it “turns out I’m just some lifelike copy that crawled out of a tube. The real Tony’s been dead since you killed him.”

The current Tony Stark is essentially a machine copy of the original version that fell in the battle of Civil War II. While the current Stark might be a copy, it’s about as good of a copy as one could be. It’s pretty much Tony Stark. However, Stark’s identity crisis is real and having to remain civil with Captain Marvel can’t be easy for him. Captain Marvel’s characterization in Civil War II did reputable damage to her likability. In the book, the well-intentioned hero’s actions ultimately lead to the death of Bruce Banner and Tony, while causing a full-blown war between the Avengers. There have been attempts to justify her actions, but Civil War II ultimately did irreversible damage to Captain Marvel.

Thankfully, Marvel has done a good job redeeming Captain Marvel since the events of Civil War II, but that doesn’t mean her actions will be forgotten about. Stark is still justifiably upset about the events that led him to be a copy of his former self. He has every right to be. Iron Man isn’t fully Iron Man at the moment – at least in physical form and things are expected to get worse.

Expecting him to forget what happened in Civil War II would make little sense. Iron Man has a grudge with Captain Marvel and it’s not about to go away anytime soon.
