Warning: spoilers for Captain Marvel #29 below!

In her ongoing series, Captain Marvel is heading down a dark path leading her to question whether she’s becoming a villain in her attempts to save the Marvel Universe. In Captain Marvel #29, Carol Danvers’ quest to learn magic leads her to team up with a longtime villain – which has her wondering if she’s making the wrong moves in her effort to save her friends and family.

After being transported to a dark future where most of the Avengers were dead and a new group of heroes emerged in the dystopian world, Captain Marvel saw the villainous Ove teleport to her own timeline. The future son of Namor the Sub-Mariner and Enchantress was responsible for the bleak reality and Carol fears he’ll destroy her own universe. In a desperate plea to stop Ove, Captain Marvel tried to get practically every sorcerer she knows to teach her magic. However, her attempts were rejected as the magic community didn’t want to give one of the strongest heroes the ability to counteract her greatest weakness. Eventually, she found a taker to teach her: The Enchantress.

In Captain Marvel #29 by Kelly Thompson, Jacopo Camagni, Espen Grundetjern, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Carol takes to the sea alongside the Enchantress to find a magical artifact called the Heart of the Serpent. Captain Marvel is forced to fight against giant sea monsters to get to the item and kills them with a powerful blast of energy. However, once she picks up the Heart of the Serpent, she’s unable to break through the barrier protecting the underwater city. Laying hopeless on the ground, Carol wonders if she’s becoming a villain.

Carol admits she deserves to be in the “stupid magical prison,” noting making plans with supervillains, killing ancient beings, and stealing magical artifacts isn’t exactly what a hero would do. When all hope seems lost, Captain Marvel notices a heat source and uses her powers to erupt a volcano and escape the underwater city.

Captain Marvel’s actions are definitely reminiscent of a supervillain’s. But, unlike the bad guys she often faces, she’s doing everything for the right reason. In her eyes, the only way to stop Ove is to learn magic and kill him before he turns her reality into the future dystopia she’s already visited. In this case, Carol sees teaming up with the Enchantress, killing ancient beasts, and stealing magical artifacts as the means to save the lives of billions. In the grand scheme of things, she’s choosing the significantly lesser of two evils. So, if acting like a villain for a little bit stops Ove, Captain Marvel is more than glad to keep skirting the line of what makes her a hero.
