Captain Marvel star, Lashana Lynch, recently spoke about how she learned of her character’s fate in the Disney+ series, WandaVision. The actress made her MCU debut in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Audiences can catch her in her latest role when No Time to Die debuts in theaters on October 8.

Captain Marvel took the Marvel Cinematic Universe back to the 1990s to explore the origins of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). That film introduced audiences to the fighter pilot-turned-superhero, as well as her former wingman, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), and her daughter Monica (Akira Akbar). The Rambeau family returned to the MCU two years later with the debut of WandaVision on Disney+, showing an adult Monica (Teyonah Parris) returning amid the chaos of The Blip to discover that Maria had died of cancer during her five-year absence caused by Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his snap in Avengers: Infinity War.

With Lashana Lynch stepping into her new role as Nomi in the Bond universe with No Time to Die, the actress recently reflected on the fate of her breakout performance as Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel and how she found out about that character’s ultimate fate in WandaVision. In an interview with Comicbook.com, she recalled that Kevin Feige personally reached out to her well in advance to let her know that Marvel would kill her off to make way for Monica Rambeau’s arc. Read what Lynch said below:

Kevin Feige, who is the nicest guy, personally emailed me way before, I want to say, over a year, year-and-a-half-plus, before WandaVision aired and explained what was happening, how it was going to happen, when it was going to happen. And him specifically saying that he didn’t want me to find out through anyone else. So there was a lot of care around that.

Ultimately, it appears tha Lynch does not mind the offscreen sendoff for her character. Moreover, she seems pleased with how the fate of Maria set up arcs for other characters in the MCU. Elsewhere in her remarks, Lynch even noted how much she enjoyed the WandaVision sequence in which Monica Rambeau gets her powers when she attempts to re-enter Westview.

Now, many fans are left to wonder if they have seen the last of Maria Rambeau in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the character has passed away in the current timeline, the MCU has never been afraid to go back in time and explore prequel stories, leaving some to wonder if a return in The Marvels is possible. Additionally, with shows like What If…? and Loki increasingly branching out into multiverse-focused narratives, a variant of Maria could always show up. Regardless of whether or not that actually happens, audiences can catch Lashana Lynch as Nomi, the new 007, when No Time to Die debuts in theaters on October 8. The Marvels will premiere next year on November 4, 2022.
