This article contains spoilers for King In Black #1 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman.

The Sentry may be one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, but Knull – the God of the Symbiotes, and Carnage‘s twisted god – has just gotten the ultimate payback for his worshiper. Created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, Robert Reynolds is one of the most powerful superheroes of all time. He was featured prominently in Brian Bendis’ classic New Avengers run, and he demonstrated his might by killing Carnage. Sentry swept Carnage up into the skies, taking him beyond the atmosphere and into space, where he literally tore him in half.

As the years passed, readers learned the Sentry was a lot more troubled than he seemed at first. He suffers from a form of dissociative identity disorder, and he struggles to restrain a dark form called the Void that threatens the entire world. The Void was unleashed in the Siege miniseries, which saw him tear the Greek God of War Ares in half – evidently a signature move – and bring down the Eternal City of Asgard. When it comes to sheer raw power, there is no Marvel hero who can compare to the Sentry, with even the Mighty Thor fearful of going up against him.

And now Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, has humbled him in the most dramatic fashion. In King In Black #1, the Sentry attempts to repeat his party trick with Knull, cutting him off from his symbiotes and taking him into space. But roles are reversed when Knull grapples with Bob – and tears the Sentry apart. As Knull notes, the Void within the Sentry is darkness made manifest, and he is the God of Darkness. He absorbs the fragments of the Void that survive into himself, before returning to Earth to continue his war with the Avengers.

Knull has a psychic connection to all the symbiotes, which means he knows exactly what the Sentry did to Carnage. But this is not just some act of ironic revenge; it is also a supreme demonstration of his might. Knull is confirming himself to be beyond anything the Marvel Universe has ever seen, for he effortlessly defeats a being so powerful he has brought down Asgard itself and torn other gods apart. What’s more, you get the distinct sense the King In Black enjoys this shocking and brutal act of murder, reveling in the bloodshed.

No doubt Carnage would be delighted to see what his god has done. There is a sense in which Carnage was Knull’s greatest servant, a twisted being who delighted in death just as his master did. Carnage may be gone, but Knull remembers what has been done to him in the past, and he delights in exacting payback on his behalf.
