Carrie-Anne Moss Talks Marvel Netflix Series Crossovers

While Canadian actress Carrie-Anne Moss is still probably best known for her work as leather-clad badass Trinity in The Matrix franchise, she last year began playing a character who could conceivably become just as iconic – that of shark-like attorney Jeri Hogarth in the Netflix corner of the Marvel TV universe. First introduced during Jessica Jones’ inaugural season, Hogarth is often a cold-blooded pragmatist, although that doesn’t always stop her from doing the right thing. It’s been quite the meaty role for Moss to chew on, and as with any Marvel Studios gig, has long-term prospects.

Moss’ rendition of Hogarth – a traditionally male character in the comics – has subsequently crossed over for an appearance during Daredevil season 2, and will play a recurring role in next year’s Iron Fist. Hogarth will also of course return as a regular for Jessica Jones season 2, although that likely won’t make it to air until at least 2018. As one might imagine, touring a character between different shows can be a lot of fun for an actor, and that appears to certainly be the case for Moss.

In a new interview with IGN, Moss offered some thoughts about Jeri’s travels between Marvel’s Netflix shows, and the difference between her larger role on Jessica Jones and her smaller turns on Daredevil and Iron Fist:

“It’s exciting. The possibility’s exciting. You hope you don’t just come in and have nothing to do. You want to come in and have something powerful. For Jessica Jones, that’s where I get to have that experience. With the other shows, I’m having fun. I did something on Iron Fist and I was excited that it was something to do. I want to feel creative when I’m working. I don’t want to just work for the sake of working. I’d love to be in all the shows.

I love it because all of them are different showrunners and the showrunners are super creative. It’s really high quality. It’s interesting to see everyone’s energy in it. Jessica Jones was specifically one thing. It has that tone, it has Melissa in it. To go into these other shows and know what it’s like to be on my show and go be a visitor on someone else’s show, seeing the difference of it, it’s fascinating.”

As enjoyable as popping in for guest spots on Marvel’s other Netflix properties can be for Moss though, she still yearns to get back to the world of Jessica Jones:

“I can’t wait to see what Melissa’s going to do. I can’t wait to see the story, because the stories were so good. She’s such a great writer and her team is so good that I can’t wait. It’s like reading a great book where you can’t wait to get back to it. I feel that way.”

As has been noted by more than one actor over the years, playing a character on TV can ultimately be a lot more fulfilling than a one-off performance in a film, assuming said film doesn’t turn into an Avengers-like franchise. The small-screen allows an actor to portray many different facets of a character that aren’t possible in a single film, with their portrayal often evolving and changing in unexpected ways over the course of the series.

In the case of Jeri Hogarth, Moss gets to do that one better, not only living in the character’s skin for multiple seasons but also traveling with her to other settings alongside just as intriguing but tonally different protagonists. Plus, it’s a steady paycheck for years on end, which is never a bad perk. So far, there’s been no confirmation that Moss will appear in The Defenders, but with her personal connections to Jessica, Foggy, and Danny Rand, it would be quite the baffling decision not to include her in some fashion.

Daredevil season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.
