The Princess Bride star Cary Elwes continues to insist that a remake of the film would be a bad idea. The Princess Bride is a 1987 Rob Reiner classic adapted from the 1973 novel of the same name by William Goldman. The film, which starred Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, and Christopher Guest, followed an epic fantasy tale as read to a young boy by his grandfather. Elwes starred in the film as Westley, a farmhand whose true love Princess Buttercup is about to be forced to marry the odious Prince Humperdinck.

The Princess Bride is an enduring classic, beloved by many across the world and quoted nonstop since its original release. Because of this, there have been many potential sequels and remakes discussed throughout the years. However, the closest such a project has ever come to fruition is the Quibi short series Home Movie: The Princess Bride, which was a recreation of the movie filmed at home by special guest stars during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking with THR, Cary Elwes reiterated previous statements about a Princess Bride reboot railing against the idea of a potential remake. He points out that “the cost of promotion and advertising has become so prohibitive now that [the studios] want to cut down on that” which involves them developing projects that already have an established fan base. However, he insists that the film is “best left alone.” He wants to preserve the sanctity of The Princess Bride, saying that “if a film has landed in the hearts of the public, then, to me, it is not a good idea to try and revisit it.” Check out the full quote below:

For the studios, the cost of promotion and advertising has become so prohibitive now that they want to cut down on that. Their feeling is that when they do a reboot or remake, they have a target audience, so they don’t have to spend as much on marketing. So I understand the motivation. But my theory is, look, if the movie is popular and it’s done well, and people love it, I think it’s pretty much best left alone. If a film has landed in the hearts of the public, then, to me, it is not a good idea to try and revisit it.

Although he wants the film to remain in its truest, most pure form, Cary Elwes is not opposed to revisiting the classic. Just last year, he helped organize a virtual live-reading reunion of the Princess Bride cast to support Wisconsin Democrats, which also included special appearances by Josh Gad, Eric Idle, Whoopi Goldberg, Norman Lear, Patton Oswalt, and Jason Reitman. He also titled his memoir As You Wish, inspired by one of his character’s iconic lines.

The Princess Bride star is certainly correct about the ways that studios are leaning on their established IP at this point in time. Especially while the entertainment industry is still struggling to right itself after the massive losses it sustained during the pandemic closures, producers are prioritizing projects like Hocus Pocus 2, Disenchanted, Legally Blonde 3, and other projects with an established fan base. It’s likely that a Princess Bride remake has been discussed at more than one board meeting, though if Cary Elwes has his way, the conversation will stop there.
