On Castlevania, Trevor Belmont is characterized by aloof ignorance, cynicism, and a wry sense of humor. However, he is also one who has a sad and lonely side. Quite loved by fans, Trevor has been further developed from the source material in the Netflix adaptation. The very inclusion of a detailed backstory has helped fans identify Trevor Belmont as a fascinating character.

For both ardent followers and first-time viewers of this Frederator Studios production, it is evident that Trevor has an apathetic attitude towards society most of the time. However, it is also interesting to learn that it was society’s ill-treatment that conditioned him to not care for those who never showed him any compassion. His loneliness, harsh upbringing, and huge responsibilities make him a character that always seems to be standing alone; that is until he meets Alucard and Sypha. Although some of these morose realities have helped forge Trevor Belmont into such a complex character, knowing what these sad realities are would help understand him better.

10 His Belmont Lineage Beckons The Censure Of Society

The Belmont family has been long fighting the forces of darkness. Despite being protectors against evil, society has had a suspicious attitude towards the clan. Game fans would remember how the supernatural abilities of Belmont descendants led the citizens of Transylvania to fear them. The anime series, however, reveals that the Church had persecuted them and deemed them as outcasts. Trevor being a Belmont representative has had to face taunts, jabs, and even altercations.

Barring Trevor managing to convince the people of Gresit to turn against the priest, (a plot-twist that definitely hurt Castlevania’s narrative), he has usually been attacked by society. This even forced him to prefer keeping his family-crest a secret and sometimes even deny his lineage. With society having shunned him and his family, Trevor’s lineage seems to be a cause for both pride and pain.

9 The Last Remaining Member Of Belmont Family

Losing a family member is sad enough. Losing them all seems like a nightmare. Sadly Trevor Belmont is a character who has had to undergo such horrendous emotional pain.

8 His Childhood Home Was Razed To The Ground

After the Church excommunicated the Belmont family, the very people this family had protected for years turned on them. The citizens of Wallachia not only denied them their duty of fighting against evil but also denied them the right to live on the lands.

They were severely persecuted to the extent of everything they owned being razed to the ground. At times, Trevor’s longing for his ancestral home is quite palpable in his voice and posture.

7 Hiding His Own Pain

On first impression, Trevor Belmont seems hilarious. Having delivered some of the funniest and best quotes of the series, he comically denies knowing his own family-crest during the second episode of the series. But quickly, it transpires that this is a defense mechanism, often bolstered by alcohol.

Given everything he’s been through, Trevor relinquishes the vows he had taken as a ‘monster-hunter.’ Instead of a proud and feared warrior, he is a lonely soul, hiding his pain and refusing to deal with it.

6 Society’s Treatment Has Turned Him Apathetic

It is quite natural that the way Trevor Belmont has been treated by society; he is initially seen as someone who is uncaring. Despite being one of the only few people alive to have the requisite practical knowledge to fight Dracula and his horde, he is ill-treated by people and not given due respect.

Therefore, his nonchalance to their problems is justified, as shown when Trevor scoffs at the idea of helping the Speakers and suggests they leave Gresit as soon as possible. However, this also reveals a sad aspect about Trevor, who has formed an unconcerned attitude towards humanity, fearing its evils more than its good.

Despite his assumed moral bankruptcy, Trevor showcases that he possesses the true qualities of a people’s protector. He does not owe anything to a world that has treated him and his family poorly, but he also knows that he is one of the few capable to put an end to Dracula’s plans.

Being the last member of the Belmont family, he must also have realized that he is the only one left to restore the pride and reputation that this great house, founded by Leon Belmont, once enjoyed. With massive shoes to fill and a burden to prove the Belmont family’s undying loyalty towards humanity, Trevor must lead a lonely life where everybody expects things from him without offering anything in return.

4 He Carries Heavy Duty On His Shoulders

An extrapolation of the massive sense of responsibility he feels towards his family name and his duty towards humanity, Trevor Belmont often takes actions that are dangerous. Even during his fight with Alucard, when the ‘Sleeping Soldier’ was discovered, Trevor calmly replies, “Killing you was the point. Living through it was just a luxury.”

This clearly shows that his aversion to anything associated with evil and sense of duty is so strong that he will do it at any cost. Trevor Belmont shoulders the responsibilities of an unappreciative world.

3 He Lived Many Years As A Vagabond

Owing to the Church and people of Wallachia destroying the Belmont Estate, Trevor has been forced to face the harsh realities of life from a very young age.

Losing his home left him with no other choice but to live the life of a vagabond. Castaway and not truly belonging to anyplace, the fact that he has no place to call his home and is also the last living member of the Belmont family makes him a vagabond in spirit, as well as in reality.

2 He Has Denied Himself Emotional Attachments

For a long time, Trevor Belmont has wandered the lands of Wallachia alone. He has kept to himself, not bothering with anybody’s business, and keeping a distance to not allow others to bother with his.

When he realizes that he is as good as he has ever been when with Sypha, it reveals a fact that Trevor has denied himself from forming emotional attachments with others for a long time in his life. She, and Alucard, are the closest things he has to a friend. The fact that Trevor has remained alone for so long, makes fans feel sorry for the selfless hero.

1 His Life Is Plagued By The Worst Of Society

Apart from the fact that he has spent most of his life fighting against despicable creatures of darkness, it is also true that Trevor Belmont has had to face and deal with some of the most unsavory characters that society might have.

Starting from the Bishop, to Sala, to even the duplicitous Judge, in the third season of the series, Trevor Belmont has come face to face with some of the evilest characters of Castlevania. Having had to face and come to terms with the worst of society must have proved as a constant barrage on Trevor’s faith in humanity. The way such vile beings have plagued his life, clearly proves that Trevor’s reality is exceedingly troubled and dark.
