Fans of Netflix’s excellent Castlevania series are shipping vampire hunters Trevor and Sypha, who became an item in the video game series. Castlevania is a hugely popular game franchise from Konami, which first debuted in 1986. Early titles in the franchise were a mix of action and platforming, where players made their way through Dracula’s castle, whipping hideous monsters until they face the main vampire himself. The series received a formula shake-up thanks to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which introduced role-playing elements in addition to a large, Metroid-style map.

Despite the popularity of Castlevania it has yet to receive a live-action adaptation. This isn’t due to lack of trying, with both Paul W.S. Anderson and James Wan (Aquaman) attached to a potential movie version at different points. The first season of Netflix’s Castlevania arrived in 2017, though the project started life as a feature-length anime movie that was sliced into four episodes. While it’s not the highest bar to jump, the Castlevania series has been praised as one of the best video game adaptations to date. The voice acting, animation, and story are all great, and season 3 is currently in production.

While Castlevania features great action and monsters, what makes it tick is the characters. Season 2, in particular, features a great central trio of Dracula’s son Alucard, vampire hunter Trevor and Sypha, a powerful sorceress. Even Dracula himself is a fleshed-out, somewhat sympathetic figure. The season ended with Dracula seemingly dead, with Alucard taking over his castle – and dealing with the emotional aftermath of killing his father – while Trevor and Sypha head off on new adventures. The two grew close throughout the season, and while romance was teased, it was never confirmed.

The Netflix series draws most of its inspiration from video game Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, with Trevor Belmont called upon to defeat Dracula’s army. Trevor is part of the infamous, monster-hunting Belmont clan, and in Castlevania’s tangled timeline he’s descended from Leon Belmont from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, a knight who first took up the battle against evil. Like the series, Trevor is joined by Sypha, Alucard and a character named Grant Danasty. Once Dracula is slain, Alucard goes into self-induced hibernation – and would later face his father again in Symphony Of The Night – Grant helps rebuild Wallachia, while Trevor and Sypha would marry shortly after.

The descendants of Trevor and Sypha would continue the battle against Dracula in the centuries that followed, while tales of their heroism would be passed down. Trevor would continue to monster hunt and played a major role in 2005’s Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, which was set three years after the events of Castlevania III. It’s unknown how Netflix’s Castlevania Season 3 will deal with the Trevor and Sypha relationship, as the show isn’t afraid to deviate from the game canon. While fans want to see their romance work out, Trevor has shown himself to be somewhat self-destructive, so the third season might make things more complicated.
