What is the so-called “Butthole Cut” of Cats? Does it truly exist hidden away on some secret server at NBC Universal? Or is it merely an Internet joke that has gone too far? The 2019 film adaptation of the musical Cats was one of the biggest cinematic disasters in recent memory. Panned by critics and ignored by audiences, Cats bombed at the box office, making only $6.5 million domestically in its opening weekend.

Cats was so infamously awful that it attracted a cult following similar to the one that developed around The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with audiences attending the movie just to sing along with the songs and make fun of its nonsensical plot and terrible production values. More recently, Cats won six Razzie Awards out of the nine nominations it secured, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay.

Recently, rumors began to circulate on-line that the CGI costumes in Cats were originally intended to have articulated anuses, which were visible as the cats danced. This rumor seems to have started with Jack Waz; a writer on the recently cancelled Howard The Duck series. Waz claimed, in a Twitter conversation regarding the making of Cats, to have a VFX producer friend who was brought in to work on the Cats movie one month before its release, whose job was to “remove (the) CGI buttholes that had been inserted a few months before.” This led Waz to conclude that there must be a “Butthole Cut” of Cats somewhere, spurring a movement on Twitter to “#ReleaseTheButtholeCut.

Unfortunately, despite the apparent wishes of a great many people, there is no evidence that the Butthole Cut of Cats exists beyond Jack Waz’s tweet. Indeed, simple logic argues against the existence of such a thing outside of the minds of furry enthusiasts. It is impossible, given the American tendency toward prudishness regarding nudity, to believe that a major Hollywood studio would ever consider depicting realistic orifices in what was meant to be a work of family entertainment.

The concept of a Butthole Cut of Cats also makes little sense within the context of the film’s troubled production. Cats was infamous for its slapdash CGI and for the numerous mistakes that were made as the film was rushed for a 2019 Holiday Season release. It beggars belief that one of these digital buttholes wouldn’t slip through the cracks into the finished movie given all the other mistakes that were made. One also has to ask why, if Cats was intended to give us realistic feline nether-regions. did they not go so far as to allow the cats to have nipples and genitals? It seems far more likely that Waz is satirizing Internet culture and trolling the movement among fans of director Zack Snyder to release his version of Justice League.
