Occasionally, DC will combine two characters to form a new one, like when Catwoman was paired with iconic Superman villain, Brainiac. This strange merged villain appeared in Superman/Batman #61. While this is an unexpected mix of characters, it certainly provided the villainess with a major upgrade.

Catwoman is best known for her thievery. She is a sneaky and clever opponent, albeit one whose love for Batman has gradually inspired her to become more of a hero. Debuting in 1940, within Batman #1, she has had numerous changes in costume and appearance. After all, she has a history that spans over eighty years. However, her Brainiac variant may be one of her strangest looks yet.

Superman/Batman #61 (2009) has the creative team of Michael Green, Mike Johnson, Francis Manapul, Brian Buccellato, Rob Leigh, Adam Schlagman, and Eddie Berganza. Within this issue, Batman and Superman are placed into a dreamworld by Doctor Destiny, who poses as “Lex Joker.” His Brotherhood of Injustice includes “Brainycat” within its ranks. This villainess largely resembles Catwoman in terms of costume, though she also bears hints of Brainiac within her headwear as well as with her green-hued skin. The change isn’t just cosmetic however, as the already tactically brilliant cat burglar now possesses Brainiac’s alien intellect.

Selina Kyle is already a very capable villain as Catwoman without any additions being placed upon her character. She knows how to fight, how to move around undetected, and how to get out of trouble fast. However, by combining her physical skill and appearance with that of Brainiac, she becomes an even fiercer foe. She is able to predict her opponents’ moves, letting her remain steps ahead of them to gain the upper hand in battle. In fact, she’s so good at it, Batman doesn’t even officially best her within their fight.

A career criminal who plots out her heists in exacting details, Catwoman’s predictive fighting style is surprisingly perfect for her character, playing on her feline reflexes and peerless instincts. While Brainiac is one of the last villains fans might assume would work in a combo with Selina Kyle, this ability is so well-suited to Catwoman’s style that it’s a shame she doesn’t possess it in DC’s main continuity.

To escape Doctor Destiny’s dream world, Batman pulls down a statue that combines Raven with Zatanna – freeing both sorceresses and transporting them to different dreams altogether. This means he no longer has to fight Brainycat, who had captured him and held him with her whip across his neck. Batman is known for being able to stay ahead of his own enemies, but he met his match against this strange, amalgamated foe. She stays ahead of him thanks to her mental superiority and is only “bested” by his targeting the source of the dream world – forcing his way out of it and to a new dream that is more manageable by comparison. Brainycat blends the best of Catwoman and Superman’s iconic foe, Brainiac, making this an incredible combination even though it initially seems like a truly bizarre match-up.
