Channing Tatum wasn’t considered as an actor with much range before he surprised viewers with this action-comedy. 21 Jump Street features highly likable characters, with Tatum’s Jenko among them. The story sees cops Jenko and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) go undercover as high school students find a drug supplier.

In a departure from the serious nature of the TV series it’s based on, the film carries a very comedic tone. Tatum and Hill’s chemistry shines through in every scene they share, as 21 Jump Street blends action with heartwarmingly funny material.

Much like its predecessor, this sequel is also considered among the best buddy cop movies ever made. The story is nearly identical, as Schmidt and Jenko go undercover at a college to find a new drug supplier. While the first movie had Schmidt become too accustomed to high school life, Jenko is the one who becomes enamored with being a college student.

Packing raunchier jokes and a bigger theme of friendship, 22 Jump Street perfected the winning combination that made the first one such a success. Channing Tatum received praise again for putting in great effort in his comedic chops, being on par with Jonah Hill in the acting department.

7 Hail, Caesar! (2016) – 72 – Stream On Netflix

The Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! is about Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) a fixer in Hollywood whose job is to cover up controversies of big-time stars. Channing Tatum appears as Burt Gurney, a Gene Kelly-esque performer who’s one of many to give Eddie a hard time through his misdeeds.

Hail, Caesar! is a satirical take on the Hollywood industry, with the film set in 1951 to showcase the ongoings happening during that time period. It features the trademark Coen Brothers style of comedy and characters whose moralities are always under question.

6 Magic Mike (2012) – 72 – Stream On HBO Max

Channing Tatum ascended to new critical heights with Magic Mike, a passion project for the actor. The story is about teenager Adam (Alex Pettyfer), a young stripper guided into the industry by Tatum’s Mike. The title character’s aspirations to move on from the world of stripping bring in an added level of conflict.

Among the more overlooked Steven Soderbergh films, this psychological thriller brings a twisting narrative that shifts focus halfway through. Channing Tatum plays Martin, a man killed by his wife who claims the drugs prescribed by her psychiatrist led to the tragic event.

Although Tatum appears only for the first half, his character’s demise steers the entire plot. Side Effects is a masterpiece when it comes to bamboozling viewers, as everything that appears to be set up for the climax is turned around right before the ending. It’s a clever thriller that deserves more viewers than it initially received.

3 Logan Lucky (2017) – 78 – Stream On Hulu

Channing Tatum teamed up with Steven Soderbergh again, this time as the lead star in Logan Lucky. It’s a heist film about a pair of brothers who plan to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway after they are unfairly laid off. Filled with quirky characters and sympathetic protagonists, Logan Lucky has Tatum combine his comedic and dramatic acting skills.

Soderbergh’s direction also garnered huge amounts of praise, as the director kept a fast-paced approach to the story while leaving out enough room to surprise viewers. Channing Tatum proved once more here that he can very well lead an ensemble cast.

2 Foxcatcher (2014) – 81 – Stream On Starz

Based on a true story, Foxcatcher is about Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) taken in by the wealthy John du Pont (Steve Carell). Tensions arise when du Pont wants to get Mark’s brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo) out of the way and ends up taking a deadly course of action.

Channing Tatum received the greatest reviews in his career for Foxcatcher, with the film gaining multiple Oscar nominations. Tatum’s role as the person divided between the influence of du Pont and Dave was lauded for the way he portrayed Mark’s inner conflict. 

1 The Lego Movie (2014) – 83 – Stream On HBO Max

Not many expected The Lego Movie to be a hit, but it ended up being massively successful at the box office. Moreover, critics loved the premise of everyman Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt) stopping a diabolical plan to ruin the lego universe while being aided by superheroes.

Channing Tatum has a supporting role as the voice of Superman, who’s largely in peril during this movie in order for Emmet to shine. Tatum’s take on Superman veers toward comedic material, showing how the Man of Steel can act out of character and still be hilarious.
