Walt Disney Studios debuts the official trailer for Cheaper By the Dozen with stars Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union. The film reboots the 2003 picture of the same name from 20th Century Fox. Disney acquired Fox in early 2019 and announced in August of that same year they were planning to reimagine the family classic. The 2003 movie was itself a reboot from the 1950 picture also named Cheaper by the Dozen, loosely based on the book by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and his brother Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.

The 2003 picture starred Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt as the heads of the Baker family and was surrounded by a cast of talented young actors like Hillary Duff, Alyson Stoner, and Liliana Mumy and was directed by Shawn Levy. The story centers around a family of 12 children and their parents who try to keep order in a chaotic house. While critics panned the film, citing a general lack of humor, audiences flocked to the theaters bringing the title #2 in the highest-grossing films of its opening weekend. This excitement from audiences led to a sequel in 2005 that met similar reception.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Cheaper by the Dozen is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 18, 2022. The trailer, seen below, showcases Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union as Paul and Zoey Baker and introduces audiences to their blended family of 10 children. Black-ish producer Gail Lerner directs the film with the screenplay by Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk.

Barris and Rice-Genzuk have worked together before on both Black-ish and Grown-ish, both critically acclaimed shows, displaying promise for their work on the new Disney+ picture. Braff has previously starred in the comedic series Scrubs and the recent film The Comeback Trail. Union is known for her roles in Deliver Us From Eva, Think Like a Man, and Bring it On, to name a few. These two are primed to lead a large ensemble with their experience in ensemble casts and comedic roles. This is one of the many properties Disney promised to reboot after acquiring 20th Century Fox. The trailer shows the two working in tandem to take the daunting task of raising children to hilariously heightened levels. Notably, the original premise of 12 children to 2 parents has changed to 10 kids making the whole family itself the titular dozen rather than just the children.

Changing the number of children in the family is only one of many changes to how the Baker’s have been portrayed. The trailer shows us an interracial, blended family, a family structure that isn’t often focused on in media while still aligning to the original’s familial comedy of errors. It seems clear that the writers and directors have gone out of their way to bring diversity to the Cheaper by the Dozen and display a family that is not traditionally the focus of relatable comedy. This is exciting news for those who loved the original film and those who never saw the 2003 picture as it promises hearty laughs for both children and adults alike.
