Chocobo GP gives all of its racers individual character abilities that can be unleashed once their meter is filled up. These work alongside the magicite spells in the game, which are similar in function to Mario Kart’s item boxes, with players even able to store both charges at once. The character abilities can do things like increase the speed of the kart, strike other racers on the track with magical energy or grant temporary invincibility from damage.

[Warning – spoilers follow for unlockable characters in final entry below.]

The unique character abilities help the racers in Chocobo GP feel more distinct than those in the Mario Kart series. Each racer has three kart setups (two of which need to be unlocked per character), which change their stats, but the character abilities remain the same. The character abilities can be extremely powerful and many of them can be used to evade damage if activated when a magicite hits the kart, but they won’t protect the player from falling off the track or from stopping when hitting a hazard. It has been confirmed that Cloud and Squall are coming to Chocobo GP in the future as well, and they’ll have their own unique abilities.

Knowing when to use the character abilities is key, as using one straight away means that the player can instantly start prepping their next use of the power, but they can also be helpful in getting the player out of a tight spot. Ultimately, it depends on the character and the situation, with players needing to use their best judgment when deciding to fire off their precious ability. Chocobo GP has 24 racers at launch, each of which has its own distinct character ability. The final two characters detailed are hidden ones that can only be unlocked by completing both versions of the story mode.

Asura, Atla, Ben, Camilla In Chocobo GP

  • Asura: Tsunami – Asura’s kart is actually a transformed version of Leviathan, which is why it’s based on Leviathan’s summon spell from the Final Fantasy series. Asura rides on the wave in a boosted state and any players that come into contact with it are damaged. The player can manipulate the direction of the Tsunami.
  • Atla: Pom-Pom Crystal – Atla steals crystals from characters that are ahead while leaving fake crystals on the track. Players who touch the fake crystals will take damage.
  • Ben: Charge – Ben grows in size and starts running on the track. While in this state, his speed is boosted and he damages any opponent he touches.
  • Camilla: Chocobo Boost – Camilla creates five rings around the track. If she drives through the rings, then her speed is boosted and she gains temporary invincibility, with the effects extended for every ring she passes through. Other racers can also benefit from the rings.

Camilla’s Pa, Chocobo, Cid, Clair In Chocobo GP

  • Camilla’s Pa: Plow Down – The cart grows two plows on either side of the kart. These boost the kart’s speed, make it invincible for a brief period of time, and damage any unit the plows touch. The plows also leave water puddles behind, which will cause karts to skid out if they hit them.
  • Chocobo: Chocobo Dash – The kart gains a boost of speed and leaves rings behind, which grants other racers a speed boost if they pass through them.
  • Cid: Three-Shot Burst – It can’t be a Final Fantasy game without a Cid. This Cid fires shot at the other racers from his tank. The input direction that is selected when the ability is activated will determine whether he shoots forward or backward.
  • Clair: Invisihood – The kart becomes invisible and it cannot be targeted by most magicite or character abilities.

Ifrit, Irma, Gilgamesh, Maduin In Chocobo GP

  • Ifrit: Hellfire – Creates a wall of fire that surges ahead, damaging all karts that it touches.
  • Irma: Boost Chain – Irma’s kart enters a state where it can small boosts by pressing the button. She can still drift and use magicite in this state.
  • Gilgamesh: Sword Saint – Gilgamesh conjures several swords and throws them onto the track. Anyone who hits them will take damage depending on the type of sword.
  • Maduin: Chaos Wave – Maduin enters a boosted state and drives directly forward in a straight line, damaging any foes he hits.

Mecha Chocobo, Racing Hero X, Ramuh, Shirma In Chocobo GP

  • Mecha Chocobo: Berserk Mode: Mecha Chocobo unleashes its artillery directly in front of the kart, damaging all foes within the area.
  • Racing Hero X: Mog Beam X – Fires a massive beam-like wall that can either go forward on the track and damage foes ahead of Racing Hero X, or can be fired backward to block oncoming attacks and damage enemy karts.
  • Ramuh: Judgment Bolt – Ramuh conjures a thundercloud that tracks a nearby racer and strikes them with a thunderbolt, causing them to wip out.
  • Shirma: Kurukuru Counter – Creates a powerful magical barrier that will counter any magicite that hit it while its active.

Shiva, Steiner, Sylph, Terra, Titan, Vivi In Chocobo GP

  • Shiva: Diamond Dust – One of Final Fantasy‘s most popular summons is back. Diamond Dust freezes nearby racers, preventing them from being able to drift, cast magicite, or use character abilities.
  • Steiner: Moonlight Slash – Steiner draws his sword and slashes a nearby racer, and will continue slashing any other nearby racers for as long as the ability is activated.
  • Sylph: Whispering Wind – Creates magical whirlwinds that slow down other karts and make it harder for them to turn.
  • Terra: Magitek Missile – Terra conjures five massive missiles that launch forward on the track and damage anyone in their path.
  • Titan: Gaia’s Wrath – Creates a damaging shockwave that harms nearby racers and creates a pillar of rock on the track ahead of any racers.
  • Vivi: Dbl Black – Viva gains the ability to use two high-tier magicite spells at the same time. The magicite can be changed depending on the directional input pressed when using the ability.

SPOILER – The Characters Unlocked By Completing Story Mode

  • Necroshell: Spinning Smash – Creates two crystal blocks that can be used to attack foes on the track or create a barrier behind the kart that protects from magicite.
  • Cactuar: Giant 1000 Needles – Fires thousands of damaging needles that hurt nearby racers, while also propelling Cactuar forward in a boosted state.

Chocobo GP will be released for Nintendo Switch on March 10, 2022.
