Chris Evans has sneakily swooped in and stolen the cameo king crown from Matt Damon in 2021. Up until this year, Matt Damon has unquestionably been the cameo king of Hollywood, but Chris Evans has plenty of time on his hands now that he’s done playing Steve Rogers/Captain America, and he’s using it to give Damon a run for his cameo money. Evans played the character for the last time in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and with his Knives Out villain, Hugh Ransom Drysdale, unlikely to return for a sequel, either, Evans took advantage of his open schedule to film two hilarious cameo appearances in movies that released in the past year.

Matt Damon has a long string of surprise cameos under his belt that made him the cameo king for years. Some of Damon’s best ones were in Deadpool 2 as hillbilly under the name of Dickie Greenleaf, in his friend Steven Soderbergh’s iPhone movie Unsane, and reprising the role of Loki from Dogma in Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. He even played himself in Thor: Ragnarok, performing on-stage as another Loki for an audience of Asgardians.

Unfortunately for Damon, his days at the top of the cameo heap have come to an end. Chris Evans came out swinging in 2021, first with a hilarious appearance in August’s Ryan Reynolds vehicle Free Guy. Evans’ cameo was but a second, but a hilarious one in which he does a spit take watching a livestream of Guy fighting with Captain America’s shield. More recently, Evans snuck a funny cameo into Netflix’s Don’t Look Up as actor Devin Peters, who stars in a movie depicting the “true story” of Don’t Look Up‘s imminent comet collision. The combined hilarity of Evan’s cameos in Free Guy and Don’t Look Up was too much for Matt Damon’s track record to compete with, and the cameo crown Damon used to wear now sits firmly on Chris Evan’s head.

With only three days left in 2021, it’s unlikely that Matt Damon can reclaim his cameo title this year. Even if he had another cameo released before the new year, it would be difficult to top Chris Evan’s cameos in Don’t Look Up and Free Guy. Damon is going to have to work extra hard in 2022 if he wants to be the cameo king again. He will return as his Ragnarok character in July’s Thor: Love and Thunder, but it’s unclear if that will be enough on its own, not to mention any cameos Chris Evans may have coming down the pike are still an unknown factor. Even before this year, Evans was no slouch with great cameos, to which his MCU detention videos and his hilarious appearance as Loki-as-Captain America in Thor: The Dark World can attest.

If Chris Evans delivers the same quality of cameos that he did in Free Guy and Don’t Look Up in 2022, it’s easy to imagine him holding onto first place in the cameo race. Matt Damon deserves credit for his long string of cameos over the years. As of right now, though, he is no longer the best cameo performer, and his odds of ever reclaiming the cameo crown are diminishing by the day.
