Actor Chris Hemsworth netted a $20 million payday for his work on Thor: Love & Thunder. After starring in 2011’s Thor, Hemsworth has gone on to play the character in multiple MCU films, including Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The next outing teams him up with Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and sees the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie.

Also joining the Thor universe for Thor: Love & Thunder is Christian Bale as Gorr The God Butcher, Russell Crowe as Zeus, and Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan. Although no official story details have been revealed, it’s been announced that Jane Foster would wield Mjolnir in this film and become “The Mighty Thor” and that Bale would be playing the villain role of Gorr. Director Taika Waititi has described the film as the “craziest thing” he’s ever done and is excited about utilizing some of the innovative technology he applied in Thor: Ragnarok yet again.

In a new article from Variety, the salaries of the top players in Hollywood are revealed, including Hemsworth’s bounty of $20 million. Hemsworth began his Thor career with a $150,000 payday when he was still an unknown. The $20 million he is paid does not include any standard back-end deals, particularly for stars of Hemsworth’s caliber.

The article discusses the changing tide of Hollywood salaries, as the pandemic has altered how these deals are made, especially in the wake of day-and-date releases and streaming content. For example, while Hemsworth is being paid $20 million for Thor: Love & Thunder, actor Daniel Craig is pulling in $100 million for his two-picture deal in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out sequels, which were bought by Netflix. These higher up-front paydays are meant to compensate actors for lack of box office back-end, which diminishes for day-and-date releases and is non-existent for direct-to-streaming titles.

Going from $150,000 to $20 million is no small leap for a ten-year journey as Thor, so Hemsworth has nothing to lament in terms of being handsomely paid. The actor has carved out an excellent career as a superhero, an action star, and a fitness guru while still stretching out his acting chops and showing his funnier side. Hemsworth will follow Thor: Love & Thunder with a Hulk Hogan biopic, a role in the Mad Max sequel Furiosa and a sequel to the Netflix hit Extraction, all of which are sure to keep him well paid.
