Johnny Depp is a retired detective investigating the murder of The Notorious B.I.G in the trailer for City of Lies. The film, which is based on the book Labyrinth by Randall Sullivan, has been overshadowed by controversy behind the scenes. Though the first trailer for the crime drama was released in May 2018, it was delayed as the result of a lawsuit involving Depp and the movie’s location manager. There were also reports that the delay might actually be the result of suppression by the Los Angeles Police Department, who are implicated over the course of City of Lies.

However, with Saban Films recently acquiring the distribution rights to City of Lies, a new preview has been released. In the trailer, which is an updated version of a teaser that previously premiered in 2018, viewers are offered hints of the complicated homicide investigation and how racism factors into the story. You can check out the trailer below.

Along with Depp and Forest Whitaker, City of Lies features a cast that includes Rockmond Dunbar, Neil Brown Jr., Xander Berkeley, Shea Whigham, Wynn Everett, Toby Huss, Louis Herthum, and Shamier Anderson. The film is directed by Brad Furman, who previously helmed The Lincoln Lawyer and 2016’s The Infiltrator, working from a script by Christian Contreras. The film will be in theaters starting on March 19, before arriving to VOD and digital platforms on April 9.

The synopsis for City of Lies reads as follows: Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan, this compelling crime-thriller follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. Oscar nominee Johnny Depp stars as determined LAPD detective Russell Poole, who spent nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder, and Oscar and Primetime Emmy winner Forest Whitaker as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with Poole in search of the elusive truth. Together they explore why the case remains cold — and why a secret division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.
