Sega has revealed that the upcoming Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania will feature Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails as unlockable characters. The collaboration comes in honor of Sonic’s 30th anniversary, as well as Super Monkey Balls‘ 20th. Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania will release later this year.

The classic Super Monkey Ball franchise tasks players with deftly guiding monkeys in balls through goal posts across a series of obstacle stages that grow ever harder. The games typically features main courses to beat, as well as a range of multiplayer mini-games. The next title in the series, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, was announced earlier this summer, and will be a remaster of the first three Super Monkey Ball console games. The game will include support for up to four players, and will retell the Super Monkey Ball story with an all-new comic book-style spin on Story Mode. A Super Monkey Ball and Sonic collaboration was teased earlier this summer, and now fans have gotten a good look at what they can expect.

Celebrating the anniversaries of both franchises, Sega has confirmed that players of Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania will be able to unlock both Sonic and Tails when the game releases. The beloved Sega mascots will be added to the SMB roster as fully playable characters, and fans won’t need to pay for the privilege. As confirmed by Sega, both Sonic and Tails will be “free and unlockable on all platforms through normal gameplay at launch.” The announcement trailer shows both characters in action, and also reveals that the Sonic content replaces the game’s banana collectibles with the Sonic franchise’s gold rings.

Fans won’t just be able to play as Sonic and Tails in over 300 Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania stages, but also during its 12 Party Games. Players can expect to dive back into classic Super Monkey Ball minigames including Monkey Racing, Monkey Soccer, Monkey Bowling, and Monkey Baseball, with Sonic and Tails introducing a fresh new spin on the remastered classics. As well as the new characters, fans will see the return of the series’ four main Super Monkey Ball monkeys, AiAi, Baby, GonGon, and MeeMee, as well as YanYan, Doctor, Jam, and Jet.

The Super Monkey Ball series has suffered from poorly-received rereleases in the past, such as 2019’s HD remaster Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD, which received mixed reviews from both critics and fans. It’s hoped that the remastered versions of the earliest console games will please both longstanding fans and newcomers, and the Sonic collaboration is already looking like a very promising addition to the game. Players won’t have long to wait to find out more about Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, with the game releasing on October 5.
