Clerks 3 will take place almost entirely at Quick Stop, according to director Kevin Smith. The original Clerks, released in 1994, was set in the single location of a New Jersey convenience store known as Quick Stop. Inspired by Smith’s time as a retail clerk, the simple premise of presenting a snapshot of the lives of titular store clerks Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) has been an enduring success. Shot in black and white, the buddy comedy is looked at as a hallmark of independent cinema. In 2019, it was recognized by the Library of Congress for its significance.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While the first film focused on the everyday weirdness of an employee being called into work on their day off, engaging in philosophical debates and getting into some strange scenarios, Clerks 2 widened its scope. The sequel begins with Dante discovering that Quick Stop is on fire. As a result of this misfortune, Dante and Randal begin working at a fast food restaurant. The film fared well critically and commercially, even with the change of scenery. But, for the third installment, which has been described as concluding the saga of Clerks, director Kevin Smith has plans to bring the franchise back to his roots.

Near the end of Clerks 2, Dante and Randal decide to buy and reopen Quick Stop. As reported by /Film, this will come into play for Clerks 3. Responding to a fan on Twitter, director Kevin Smith noted that the long-awaited third installment will take place almost entirely at the convenience store that stared it all. The wording does leave room for some scenes which might unfold elsewhere, but overall, it seems like Clerks 3 will closely resemble the first film in its setting. Check out Smith’s tweet below.

Clerks 3 was announced last October, with Smith announcing that he was working on an entirely new script. It has since been revealed that the story of the sequel will be influenced by Smith’s real-life heart attack. This will be expressed through Randal, who nearly loses his life after a heart attack and goes through a midlife crisis. The acclaimed director also noted that his return to the beloved retail workers will contain meta elements.

In recent years, Smith’s output has been divisive. The recent Jay & Silent Bob Reboot has proved to be somewhat of an exception, greeted with an overwhelmingly favorable audience score. Given that Clerks 3 will feature the return of both O’Halloran and Anderson, as well as the official return of Quick Stop, it appears the third chapter in the lives of Dante and Randal has the right pieces in place to be a success.
