Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 brings back Gar Saxon, the ruthless Mandalorian from Star Wars Rebels. With the Siege of Mandalore underway, the final season of Clone Wars is bringing in many of its most iconic characters. Though the spotlight is on Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul, there is a wealth of other individuals to watch in the background. One of which is Saxon, first introduced in Rebels as the leader of the Imperial Super Commandoes under Emperor Palpatine. At last, his origins are revealed, dating his service back to the age of the Shadow Collective.

After plenty of planning in the background, Bo-Katan Kryze prepares to retake Mandalore from Maul. In the episode “Together Again”, she recruits Ahsoka for both her Jedi training and connections to the Republic. For the invasion to be a success, she required more troops only the Grand Army of the Republic could provide should they want to. After a meeting with Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, she brings with her a battalion of the 501st clone legion led by Captain, now Commander Rex. The group descends on the planet, taking on Maul’s Mandalorian forces head-on to capture the Sith Lord.

In the chaos, Prime Minister Almec orders the super commandoes to prepare for an all-out war, a group that is led into battle by none other than Gar Saxon himself. This is his second chronological appearance before he arrives in Rebels, which takes place many years after the Clone Wars (the first being a cameo in the Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comic). In “Part I: Old Friends Not Forgotten”, he is not shown for long, but he gets the spotlight in part 2 when Maul sends him to kill Prime Minister Almec, revealing his epic Darth Maul inspired armor.

In Star Wars Rebels, Mandalore is firmly under the thumb of the Empire. Ever the opportunist, Saxon saw the writing on the wall and elected to kneel to the regime. In response to his fealty, he became Governor of Mandalore per the Emperor’s request, enacting his will across the planet. His troops became Imperial Super Commandoes, donning similar red and white armor to their superior. He ultimately met his demise at the hands of Ursa Wren, the mother of Ghost crew member Sabine Wren who defeated him in a battle for the Darksaber.

Saxon is not designed to be a fan favorite, he’s arguably one of the cruelest and power-hungry characters in all of Star Wars. At the same time, it is interesting to see where he came from and the conflicts he was present for. The Siege of Mandalore is a monumental moment in the current canon, marking the end of the clone war. Tying him to such an event makes his scenes in Rebels all the more interesting to witness. He did not spring up out of the blue, he was a leader during one of the most pivotal battles in galactic history. Bringing Gar Saxon’s journey full circle via The Clone Wars‘ final season is yet another great way to tie this series to Rebels.
