Alicia Silverstone has recently admitted that she would be interested in seeing Cher from Clueless cross paths with Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. Written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the 1995 teen comedy Clueless, which was loosely based on the 1815 Jane Austen novel Emma, would go on to become a smash hit and enduring part of ‘90s popular culture. Launching the careers of not only Silverstone but also Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd and the late Brittany Murphy, it is still widely considered to be one of the most successful teen films of all time.

Six years after Silverstone’s portrayal as the effervescent fashionista Cher, Witherspoon would tackle a decidedly similar character in the 2001 adaptation of Amanda Brown’s novel Legally Blonde. Following the story of Southern California sorority girl Elle Woods, Legally Blonde sees Witherspoon’s character embark on gaining entry into Harvard Law School in a bid to win back her former boyfriend. Spawning a sequel, a direct-to-DVD spinoff film, and a stage musical, a third film starring Witherspoon is currently in development based on a script being written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor.

Most recently Silverstone was asked if she would be open to the possibility of reprising her Clueless character for a potential crossover with Witherspoon’s Elle Woods. Speaking with Looper about her new shark film Requin, Silverstone suggested that the idea “would be really fun” and that if Witherspoon “wants to do it, I’m in.” Check out her full response below:

Well, I think that would be really fun, and you should pitch that idea. It’s a good one. I think that they’re a little too similar, aren’t they? Isn’t Elle sort of a version of … They’re similar in their design, but … I don’t know, but I’m game. [If] she wants to do it, I’m in.

Given both characters’ bubbly and upbeat nature, as well as their shared aptitude for framing and winning arguments, one could easily envision the two women facing one another in a courtroom. Given Cher’s connection with the legal community via both her father and stepbrother, it would be all too easy envisioning her pursuing a legal career after her time at Bronson Alcott High School. Watching both Cher and Elle Woods face off against one another in a dazzling display of legal aptitude, one sure to baffle any jurors or members of the judiciary in attendance, would undoubtedly be a treat for fans of either franchise.

While the future of the Legally Blonde series seems set to continue with the upcoming threequel, question marks were placed over a potential Clueless reboot series when it was reportedly passed over by the Peacock streaming service last year. Perhaps now would be the ideal time for the respective studios to find a way for Kaling and Goor to write Cher’s character into Legally Blonde 3. Whether or not it ever eventuates, no doubt fans of both Clueless and Legally Blonde will be intrigued by the possibilities of having the two lead characters cross paths.
