Johnny’s inevitable Cobra Kai season 5 story means he needs to leave karate. Although Karate has helped Johnny in many ways throughout the past four seasons, it has always done more harm than good. Due to karate, Miguel was seriously injured (almost paralyzed), Johnny’s relationship with Robby got tenser than before, and overall it created an unsafe environment for many high school students.

Cobra Kai is a comedy, but it also has some more serious plot points, specifically regarding how karate has affected Johnny’s entire adult life. His sensei, John Kreese, is the closest to a father figure that he has, yet Kreese’s lessons are damaging: always striking first and resorting to violence. Due to this, Johnny has a troubled adulthood, resulting in no serious romantic relationships, a strained relationship with his son, and living an overall bitter life. Cobra Kai gives justice for Johnny being a sensei, and he finally starts to use karate for good in Cobra Kai season 4. By the end of the season, though, it is evident that karate has harmed Johnny and those he cares about, which is why he needs to leave karate in Cobra Kai season 5.

There are several reasons why Johnny’s Cobra Kai season 5 story means he needs to leave karate. The Cobra Kai season 4 finale ended with both Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang losing the All-Valley-Karate Tournament to Cobra Kai. After losing, Miguel runs away to Mexico to find his birth father and Johnny tells Miguel’s mother that he would find him, which means Johnny will most likely be in Mexico with Miguel in Cobra Kai season 5. Johnny has always cared for Miguel, but he is starting to realize he is more than just a karate student to him; he is more like a son. He knows he can be there for Miguel in a way that Kreese never was for Johnny, but in order to do this, he and Miguel need to leave karate for good before anyone else gets hurt, avoiding repeating the cycle that made Johnny’s life so troubled.

Another reason why Johnny needs to leave karate is due to his strained relationship with Robby. Although he hasn’t been a good father to Robby, the two finally reconnect at the end of Cobra Kai season 4. After Robby’s loss in the All-Valley-Karate Tournament, he goes to Johnny, and they share an emotional hug. Karate is one of the worst things for him and Robby’s relationship throughout the series, only worsening the tension between them by competing on separate teams. Robby also warns Johnny that Cobra Kai’s dojo and Terry Silver are influencing Kenny and other students for the worse. With Terry now being the sole teacher of Cobra Kai, Johnny’s devoted attention should be focused more on ending the dojo – but not by fighting with Eagle Fang, by doing it without resorting to violence.

Whether Johnny leaves karate for good, his Cobra Kai season 5 story means he needs to go for at least the time being. It will not only help save any potential students from getting harmed and influenced in the way he did growing up, but also will most likely help with his relationships as well. Given Cobra Kai’s season 5 villain is Terry Silver, Johnny is also going to need to put his time and energy into trying to stop him from hurting any more students.
