Cobra Kai‘s season 4 ending saw Miguel heading to Mexico in the search for his father, and that might set up a better story for season 5 than what Daniel and Mr. Miyagi had in Karate Kid 2. After giving up fighting in the tournament and leaving without telling anyone, Miguel is now on his way to Mexico to find out more about his father and his past. With four seasons of clues and teasing, it looks like Cobra Kai season 5 will finally dive into Miguel’s backstory.

Introduced as a very Daniel-like character who needed the help of a mentor figure to face the challenges of life, Miguel quickly evolved into one of Cobra Kai‘s most interesting characters and one of the show’s most skilled fighters. After going back and forth in his relationship with both Sam and Johnny Lawrence, Miguel now needs to come to terms with his own history. Unsure that karate is a priority and aware that Johnny cannot fully make up for the absence of a father in his life, Miguel had to make a difficult decision at the end of Cobra Kai season 4.

Miguel’s trip to Mexico could offer not only a much-needed change in pace in Cobra Kai but also a personal journey that would greatly benefit the character. In fact, Miguel’s time in Mexico may resemble and even surpass the story of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi to Okinawa in Karate Kid 2. Like Daniel back then, Miguel needs time away from home to clear his head and define what he wants out of life. Similarly, Miguel also needs to face the ghosts of his past, something that was the central theme of Mr. Miyagi’s story in Karate Kid 2. The main difference between Miguel’s story in Cobra Kai season 5 and Daniel and Miyagi’s in Karate Kid 2, and what makes the former possibly better than the latter, is that whatever happens to Miguel will have consequences for the character and those who care about him for the rest of the show. Because the Karate Kid movies were so episodic, nothing that happened to Daniel and Miyagi in Okinawa had any consequences for the story of Karate Kid 3.

Also, Miguel’s journey in Cobra Kai season 5 can combine the stories of both Daniel and Miyagi in Karate Kid 2. This will add a lot to Miguel’s character and may cause him to evolve more than he did in the last four seasons. Initially the focus of the show, Miguel ended up losing some space due to the increasing number of storylines in Cobra Kai, such as Terry Silver’s plan and Chozen’s arrival. Giving the former All Valley Champion a story that was previously split between Karate Kid’s two most important characters, Daniel and Miyagi, would shift Cobra Kai’s focus back to Miguel and set the stage for the return of a more self-assured character. Miguel’s trip to Mexico is also set to be an emotional roller coaster that continues the fatherhood and family themes of Cobra Kai season 4.

Daniel and Mr. Miyagi’s trip to Okinawa offered some great moments for Karate Kid 2, but Miguel’s story in Mexico in Cobra Kai season 5 could deliver something even better. After four seasons restricted to the dojos of the Valley, Cobra Kai season 5 could also benefit from a story that takes place far from home. Whatever the future holds for Miguel, it’s sure to also affect the stories of Sam, Johnny Lawrence, and Cobra Kai as a whole.
