Cobra Kai is gearing up for its upcoming third season, and a series of new promo photos are giving fans a look at what’s to come. Season 3 will be the first Cobra Kai season produced since the show was acquired by Netflix – the first two having been produced and released on YouTube’s premium subscription platform, then called YouTube Red. The series has been a big hit since moving to Netflix, and a fourth season has already been ordered.

Cobra Kai follows Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso – the respective antagonist and protagonist of the original Karate Kid – 34 years after the first film’s events. The show is mostly a redemption story for Johnny (William Zabka). He deals with his past mistakes while training a new generation of Cobra Kai karate students and clashing with old rival Daniel (Ralph Macchio and former master John Kreese (Martin Kove). While Johnny and Daniel remain rivals in many ways, the show presents their struggles with the past in an often paralleled fashion.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The first look at season 3, set to debut on Netflix on January 8, 2021, comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. The images foreshadow the continued three-way conflict between Daniel, Johnny, and Kreese. Among other things, the pictures show Miguel recovering in the hospital after his injuries at the end of season 2, Robby seemingly being detained in a juvenile detention center, and Kreese training a class of no-mercy Cobra Kais.

Season 3 also may see the return of Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue), Johnny’s ex-girlfriend from the original Karate Kid film who leaves him for Daniel (albeit temporarily). Mills sends Johnny a friend request on Facebook at the end of season 2, though he doesn’t seem to notice it at the time. Shue’s return as Mills would bring another core character back from the first movie, and it would add an interesting layer to Johnny’s ongoing journey toward redemption.

Whatever new secrets season 3 holds, it’s bound to bring existing tensions even higher between Daniel, Johnny, and Kreese – who currently is in full control of the Cobra Kai dojo. Will the two younger masters join forces to defeat the new (old?), brutal Cobra Kai? Will the return of Ali help Johnny and Daniel reconcile and deal with their past? There’s plenty of drama and plenty of fighting to go around when Cobra Kai returns to Netflix on January 8, 2021.
