Cobra Kai star Griffin Santopietro previews what’s ahead for Anthony in season 5. Santopietro has portrayed Anthony in the popular Karate Kid continuation since season 1. However, when viewers were first introduced to the character, the only son of Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) was more often seen with his head buried in a screen — though he’d occasionally speak up to give his sister, Samantha (Mary Mouser), a hard time. That all changed with Cobra Kai season 4, as Anthony came into greater focus and developed a rivalry with newcomer Kenny Payne (Dallas Dupree Young).

Anthony, on the whole, goes through a major evolution. He confesses to his father Daniel that he feels out of the loop when everyone talks about Mr. Miyagi, as he doesn’t remember the man. Still, over the course of Cobra Kai season 4, Anthony learns to gradually embrace karate and take on more responsibility as his dynamic with Kenny shifts. He goes from being the bully to being bullied, once Kenny learns to stand up for himself and arguably takes things too far. He also becomes more comfortable doing things for himself, following a tense confrontation with Daniel.

Speaking with AfterBuzz TV, and previewing what’s ahead in the already-renewed Cobra Kai season 5, Santopietro was careful not to reveal too much. Still, he promised that Anthony would continue to evolve. He also promised that Anthony’s feud with Kenny would be examined further, saying that the youngest LaRusso will feel remorse over his actions. Santopietro’s quote is included below.

“One of my favorite things about next season is that you see Anthony is continuing to grow as a person. He feels bad for what he did to Kenny.”

Santopietro stops short of saying it, but it wouldn’t be too surprising if Anthony strikes up a friendship with Kenny in Cobra Kai season 5. The series has maintained a knack for flipping perspectives. In its beginnings, the Karate Kid sequel spinoff was keenly focused on depicting the iconic movie franchise in a novel way by initially making Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) more of the protagonist, and allowing former hero Daniel to appear in a more ambiguous light. Cobra Kai has since complicated that binary framing, driving home that neither character is all good or all bad.

To a lesser extent, the same holds true for Kenny and Anthony. Kenny, at first, seems overwhelmed by Anthony’s bullying and helpless. But as he learns how to fight back, he enjoys the rush of power and becomes just as cruel in his vendetta – even as Anthony tries to apologize. It remains to be seen where this leaves the pair’s relationship for Cobra Kai season 5, but Santropietro’s remarks promise that Anthony’s journey from a minor character to a main character will continue.
