Almost as if right on schedule, a leak detailing that the 2021 installment of the Call of Duty franchise might be set in the 1950s during the Korean War with the title of Guerilla Warfare has surfaced. The leak comes from a previously reliable Call Of Duty source that specializes in news centered around the mighty Activision IP. This time of year is usually when we begin hearing rumblings of the current year’s upcoming annual release of a Call Of Duty game as Activision never misses a beat in its release scheduling.

Activision has seen historic success with its already successful Call Of Duty franchise in the past few years. With the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2019, Activision added the Warzone mode that was a fresh take on the classic battle royale mode that has hit the gaming industry in the past few years. This mode was immediately embraced by gamers and the game saw concurrent player counts that were unheard of even for the Call Of Duty franchise. Since then, Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was released in November of 2020 and became one of the best-selling video games in history. The guns, equipment, and perks of Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was integrated into Warzone, blending properties from both previous installments of the series.

A leak by ModernWarzone hints that Call Of Duty 2021 will be set during the 1950s and the Korean War with the title of Guerilla Warfare. While this is just a leak, hints at upcoming Call Of Duty content from this source has held water before. This time of year is usually when we begin to hear whispers of the inevitable yearly release for the first-person shooter franchise. No official comment has been made by Activision as of yet and it might be quite some time until we hear anything at all from the publisher on their next game.

Support for each yearly release of Call Of Duty usually stays significant up until the next installment is released, This was focused on even more in the previous year’s game transition considering that Warzone acted as a bridge between both Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Many are curious about how Activision will handle its current content formula going forward. The current formula in question is a hybrid of the Battle Pass format used by various other free-to-play battle royales on the market and the more generic yearly release formula that Call Of Duty has followed since the Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 days.

The integration of content from two different Call Of Duty games into the free-to-play Warzone structure was not a perfect process, however. The game mode has seen plenty of glitches, exploits, and weapon imbalances that seem to crop up weekly as the mode’s millions of players weed them out through hours of play. While imperfect, Activision has shown a swift response to these issues and continues to improve the games every month. Activision has also announced that it is seeking ways to integrate the successful formula it has achieved with Warzone into other franchises it oversees such as Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch.
