Break out the streamers and the grenades, because party mode is coming back to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. As the years go on and Call of Duty‘s online offerings get more and more robust, the developers of the series continue to throw everything at the wall when it comes to game modes. From experimental spins on deathmatch like Frontline to fan-favorite side modes like Gun Game, each year’s Call of Duty experience typically cycles what’s available in order to keep things fresh for players week in and week out. While there’s always a core of deathmatch and objective modes, logging in once a week will likely grant players the opportunity to try out something unique.

In the year since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s release, players have seen their fair share of variety. With live service games being all the rage, Activision has doubled down on the variety in an attempt to make its old school multiplayer suite seem as lively as Fortnite when it comes to updates. Players have their preferences (usually involving the close-quarters map Shipment), but there has been everything from a combination of Deathmatch and Domination to more novel variations liked Cranked, which forces players to keep killing to stay alive like in the Jason Statham action classic.

For this week’s playlist update, Activision announced several additions and subtractions to the game’s playlists. The most exciting is the featured Party Mode Moshpit playlist, which includes three distinct free-for-all modes. Gun Game starts players with a low-grade weapon and upgrades their arsenal with every kill. The race is on for the final weapon, which is usually a melee implement that makes earning victory both more challenging and more rewarding. One in the Chamber starts players with just a single bullet and one life, meaning that it’s all or nothing. Speaking of, Party Mode also has a mode called All or Nothing where players spawn with an empty gun and must procure ammo before they can fight back.

If Party Mode isn’t calling out, there are other changes in this week’s update. Classic game mode Demolition is a featured playlist, pitting an attacking team trying to blow up bomb sites against a defending team hoping to – well, defend them. Boots on the Ground War, a more realistic 64-player deathmatch (if such thing is possible) is now out, replaced with the regular old Ground War that features HUD elements and tanks. Finally, Shoot the Ship, a playlist focused on Shipment, remains in the rotation for the third week during “Shiptember.”

While it’s hard for anyone new to jump into a game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward has done its best to provide plenty of options to both current and lapsed fans. Bringing back fan-favorite modes on a regular basis may lure people in for a nostalgic trip down memory lane while more grindy modes on smaller maps satisfy the hardcore Call of Duty lifers. It’s all a balance, one that most studios under Activision’s watch have had to learn over the years.
