Cole Sprouse talks about his former Big Daddy co-star Adam Sandler and how his career has always been a successful balance between box office hits and more artistically driven projects. Sprouse, star of Riverdale and the new Moonfall on HBO Max, made Big Daddy along with his twin brother, Dylan, at the age of six, and despite mixed reviews, the film was a box office hit grossing over $234 million. Sprouse’s other roles include The Suite Life of Zack and CodyFriends, and Five Feet Apart.

Big Daddy followed Sandler’s character as he unexpectedly becomes the guardian of a young boy (Sprouse), giving his character a chance to learn a lesson about responsibility. Similar to Sandler’s other comedies, Big Daddy has developed a cult following among his fanbase. Oscar-nominated director Paul Thomas Anderson has been cited as one of the film’s admirers, saying it inspired him to cast Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love.

In an interview with People, Sprouse talks about his former co-star and how his career has struck a good balance between art and commerce. He talks about how Sandler has a knack for finding both large and small scale projects to be a part of, as well as supporting his friends in the process. He also mentions seeing Sandler at the premiere of Uncut Gems where they reconnected and conversed. Read Sprouse’s quote below:

“Perhaps I’m a bit biased because I’ve known him for ages, but I do admire his career. He’s got a really, really wonderful balance between art and commerce that I think is the currency of a real working actor. He’s walking that line beautifully and he’s raising up all of his friends at the same time, which I think is incredible.”

In the same interview, Sprouse talks about how after Riverdale ends he’d like to make more films, citing Sandler as an inspiration for the plan. Though it hasn’t been confirmed, Sprouse hints that Riverdale could end soon due to his turning 30 this August, citing a desire to move to the next stage of his career. He mentions how doing romance films helps his established audience who grew up watching him on the Disney Channel see his range and ability to take on more challenging roles.

Though Sandler’s films are rarely critical darlings, his success and reputation speak for themselves, with many in the industry, including Sprouse, recognizing his hard work and positive working spaces. Sandler’s upstanding reputation in the industry is one that can’t be invented by a publicist or agent and shows that despite all the pressures of movie-making, there’s simply no substitute for kindness and hard work. Whatever’s next for Adam Sandler or Cole Sprouse, they’re sure to go at it with the assured goodness of people who have spent decades in an uncertain industry, making work they can be proud of along the way.
